Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidra Monet.
Deidra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for hair started over 20 years ago at the ripe old age of 14… my mother decided to take a product that a lot of us are personally familiar with, the unforgiving “Relaxer,” and applied it to my then 8-year-old sister’s beautiful waist length hair… needless to say, my mother was not a professional and baby sister’s hair suffered a major fall out. I had to write my mother’s mishap, that’s when I discovered hair braiding; the art of taking synthetic braiding, hair extensions, and weaving it into my sister’s natural hair. Satisfied with what I created, as well as my sister’s confirmation of elation, enabling her the courage to look in the mirror again, without crying… all was right in the world, and I discovered a hidden talent and desire.
In later years, I would decide to take hair more seriously as a professional hair stylist in the great City and State of Houston Texas; I started my education with “Houston Training Schools.” In later years, after being a full-time parent, I would decide to refresh my skills at a second cosmetology school, where I became even more diverse and as well as refreshed in my skills, I was taught by Houston’s finest educators national and international. The institution also located in the great City and State of Houston Texas, “Regency Beauty Institute.”
I would gain more knowledge throughout the years and become proficient, skilled, in the art of hair cutting, as well as the art of hair coloring, like a mad scientist formulating colors. My passion for transforming one’s image has always been a personal quest for my self, as well as my guest, being knowledgeable in most hair extensions has given me the opportunity to accommodate everyone.
I’ve been blessed to work with some of the worlds well-known celebrities, public servants, everyday superheroes and more. In the course of my career, I continue to stay present with the modern hair trends, staying current on what’s trending in the hair and beauty world, with continued education as well as hair events, travel, and social media.
Although this ride has not always been smooth, it has been well worth the journey, my education, and skills have allowed me to take my career to unimaginable places… the beauty industry has given me opportunities that once were a dream. As the journey continues, as I reach new heights, set more goals, I’m still in this race to win, with future success, the journey continues! Bon Voyage!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles I’ve faced through my journey as a professional hair stylist has been anything from, having to make corrections on color work, which taught me and built me to have a great passion and respect for those who came before me.
I’ve struggled early in my career with not being able to always hit a home run, where my client may not have been as enthusiastic about the service, I would take work home, allow it to eat away at me until I was able to invite the less than enthusiastic client back, with a certain gift of wooing them, and hitting that home run!
One major struggle was putting a high price on my work. I would undervalue my work and shortchange myself, when the work I did took time, artistic ability and honestly, was worth the price and more.
