Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Best
Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like many newer Austinites, I am a California transplant. While pursuing an acting career in Los Angeles I became disenchanted with the film industry. (A much longer story!) This, along with suffering debilitating seasonal allergies is what led me to seek acupuncture as a treatment, and ultimately as a new career path. I was very impressed by the efficacy of acupuncture and it felt like a natural fit for me professionally.
I grew up in a family of healthcare workers and have always wanted to help people feel better. When I finished my masters there weren’t many opportunities for hire, so running your own practice is what a lot of practitioners in my field ended up doing. Being in a new city and building my own business was no easy feat. With a lot of hard work, I feel pretty good about what I’ve been able to accomplish- and the people I’ve been able to help feel better with holistic medicine!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would say it has been a smooth road with some bumps along the way. Acclimating to a new city while starting a practice from scratch was a bit of a juggling act. Obviously, one of the biggest challenges to date has been one we have all faced: adapting to changes due to the pandemic. I have tried to see these bumps as learning opportunities. To stay adaptable and positive, while keeping my main objectives (my why), in sight.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I practice acupuncture, but I also try to make my patient sessions a complete holistic experience- addressing the mind and spirit along with the body. I use many tools from traditional Asian medicine and other holistic forms of medicine to achieve the best results possible. I genuinely want to understand people and make them feel comfortable and cared for. I am very good with people who are new to acupuncture, as I will take the time and care needed to educate and empower them to make positive, healthy changes in their lives. I’m proud of the number of people I have been able to help along the way.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
The word “risk” implies that there is inherent danger or a possibility of loss. I tend to reframe thinking of this kind, focus on what can be gained to minimize fear. Any creative thinking- when you are not following an established formula and the result is up in the air- could be considered taking a risk. Thinking outside the box involves a certain amount of risk-taking, and yet it is a part of any successful entrepreneur or business owner’s growth process.
As cliched as it sounds, there typically isn’t a path to success that doesn’t involve taking some risks. The most difficult part of this is knowing when to take the leap- whether it’s when to spend money on advertising, or the right time to take on an associate. I have found that apart from looking at recurring revenue and other practical aspects of my business, some of these decisions do have a certain level of gut instinct to them. It’s absolutely necessary to do a self-check to ensure fear of loss isn’t holding you back from taking risks that yield the potential for growth.
