Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Stephens-Holland.
Krystal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always say that I was gifted to do Holistic therapy. As a child, my mother would come home from a long day’s work, and I would take her shoes off and massage her feet no one taught me how to do it, I was just drawn to it, I would even daydream about going to visit cancer patient’s and bringing then plants, not knowing that plants give off important oxygen, and cancer thrives on de-oxygenated cells (shrugs) a child’s imagination right. So, at 18, when it was time to graduate from high school my mother said ” Krystal have you thought about going to massage therapy school? in my mind I said, Massage therapy is not a “REAL” career, well, after accumulating debt attending different colleges searching for what suited me… I answered the call and realized massage therapy/holistic therapy whatever you want to call it suited me better than any other college course, and it has been one of the most rewarding choices I have ever made.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The importance of a mentor is an understatement if it wasn’t for my mentors Undrai and Bridget Fizer, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I now understand that you have to be discerning of every relationship your in not just intimate, but friendship wise to. They all affect your progress. Yes, I had roadblocks most were mental, fear, and being comfortable with a “guaranteed” paycheck but my soul wasn’t satisfied, this is my ordained destiny, but my surroundings gave me the push, I couldn’t give myself.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a licensed massage therapist, with my own mobile massage therapy company. I’ve always been a “traveler” at heart, I know I get to do it every day while meeting new people. I do it all, but my specialty is lymphatic drainage. The most rewarding thing is hearing one of my elderly clients say “I haven’t felt this good in 20 years” or a client who is recovering from a tummy tuck says “OMG, I can stand up straight”, it makes me feel that I’ve made a contribution to mankind. What sets me apart? Hmm, my integrity, if my colleague needs me to work in their replacement for a few hours, I will do it as if it was my own company, respecting them enough not to steal their clients because I understand the work one has to put in to even get a client.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Do what you’re naturally good at, no matter how insignificant others may make you feel about it, it’s your gift to share. And these get rich schemes never work, lol.
