Life and Work with Marcie Aguayo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcie Aguayo.

Marcie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working with tutus and bows seven years ago, since my oldest, Leilani, was a few months old. My mom motivated me to begin creating ideas. She saw something in me I didn’t. I will forever be grateful. My little business has grown into something I could have never expected and I know God has more in store. I always had a mind for creating things, I just never knew what it could turn into. My grandmother taught me the basic hand stitch and straight stitch with a 1900s sewing machine that stopped working after a couple of goes. Ever since, I never gave up. I have worked my way up on experience through complete trial and error, investments lost, no monetary gain for the sake of getting better at what I had set my mind to. Seven years later, I am creating skirts, dresses, bows, party decorations, and so much more. It truly is exciting to do something I have a passion for! I have been blessed with a gift, by God’s grace, I have been able to invest in. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store!!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It actually has not been easy at all. Every step and every day is a learning process. There has to be trial and error in order to know what works best for you, your family and customers. Compromise has been a must for me in my journey. I knew I had to make a name for myself above all obstacles and find a way to stand out. I had to start from the very bottom and slowly but surely work my way up. My biggest advice is to NEVER GIVE UP. If you know your heart is set on what you do, keep pushing. There are times when there are not enough orders coming in and there are times when it’s too much to handle. You will get through it. Continue to walk in favor of the Lord and take breaks when needed. When there are breaks, it can take a toll on your clientele but it will go back to normal if not better than before! Don’t allow what you do to become a burden. Always find joy in it.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I do a little bit of everything! Tutus, bows, custom shirts, dresses, skirts, party decorations, invitations, maternity sashes, custom wood boards, wedding decorations, vinyl creations, paper flower, photo prop frames and probably some more things I’ve missed. Tutus have become my forte. They were one of the two items I started with seven years ago and they’re still going strong. I have been able to work with tulle to create differently styled tutus, skirts, and dresses. I truly believe my passion for the items I create and strong will to keep learning and growing sets me apart. I want to try my hand at every custom creation I possibly can!

Who have you been inspired by?
My mother, grandmother, and aunt have been my complete inspiration. These women are the true definition of what a hard worker is. They kept pushing through every obstacle in life they’ve ever faced. From my mom being a single mom of three girls while working a full-time job to my grandmother catching a bus every morning and evening working doubles to my aunt being a college student and working two jobs. They have defied odds and become successful in everything they set their heart to. To top this all off, creativity runs in my family!! My mom motivated me to start my business and constantly gives me ideas. My grandmother taught me the basic knowledge of sowing and does knitting. My aunt is an amazing photographer, has her own blog and does graphic design. I couldn’t be any more proud to say they have been such an inspiration to me and I am forever grateful for the woman they’ve helped me become in life and in my business.
