Today we’d like to introduce you to Oriana Velasco.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Oriana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am from Venezuela and everything started back in 2011 when I moved to Boston for a year. At that moment, I did not want to leave my country and my anxiety levels raised, to the point that I used food as comfort, the result was more than 30 extra pounds in my 5’2 ‘ body. When I returned to my country, little by little, my weight returned to normal.
It was in 2014 when I moved to Houston, unlike the experience I had in Boston here I feel at home, and I thank this wonderful city for all the opportunities and everything I have today. It was last year when I made the decision to study something that would allow me to help women who are going through situations similar to mine, who want to lose weight but do not know how to start doing it, help them discover what aspects of their life need attention, balance and increase their self-esteem. How? Helping them to understand that the most important thing is not to be perfect, but to be the best version of themselves, thanks to this idea I got enrolled and certified as Health Coach at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
Has it been a smooth road?
The first obstacle and the one affected me the most, was to see how the important people in my life judged me, label me and even criticized me, but what I have best done is learned when to keep my thoughts to myself, breath and remember that in my heart I know why I am doing things or why I stopped doing them.
It has not been an easy path, I am Health Coach from the heart and I dedicate a lot of time, but I also work full time as a kindergarten teacher at Houston ISD, and I also help my husband with his company. I think the key and the advice I can give to other women is work on your organization skills, carry an agenda and plan to do 3 to 5 important tasks per day. The second piece of advice is don’t be afraid to ask for help, people don’t know what you need until you ask for it, and there are good people willing to help others in this city.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I help women to find balance in their lives, to understand that in order to take care of their family, their home, their work and their relationships they first have to take care of themselves. And what I am most proud of is that working together we can make great changes to bring happiness, health, and harmony into their lives. I do this work from the heart, I love being able to help from my own experience, there is nothing better than having a brand concept where, in this case, the first one that gets help to be the best version of itself, it’s me, I feel this is the big difference with others.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Absolutely, my mother was a single mom, she went out of her way to make sure I had the opportunity to go to college and I am proud to say that thanks to her, I got my bachelors degree at the age of 20. I owe everything to God and my mom. On the other hand, my interest in health and well-being arises because I have lost several family’s members because of cancer and I thought I have to do something, I do not want this to continue happening in my family. As a result, I decided to learn how to live a healthier and happier life.
