Today we’d like to introduce you to Author Mya.
Hi Author, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was always an avid reader in elementary school. I loved all genres of books. My fondest memories include going to the library on the weekend and checking out the max number of books alongside my mother.
When I felt like I’d read everything, I started to wonder where I could find books with characters who looked like me and had upbringings similar to mine.
Then I took the leap of faith at 13 to write those books myself.
At 16, I published my first romance novel.
Ten years later, I have over 20 books in my catalog that represent everyday Black Romance. Even in fiction, I create a safe space for Black Women and Men to be loved unconditionally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many bumps in the road. There were huge breaks in my career where I decided to venture off into other lanes. I went to college and got a degree in criminal justice, only to fall back in love with writing and made it my full-time career.
There were times when I felt imposter syndrome come in and tell me I wasn’t good enough to make a living writing books.
There were times when my other hats interfered with my writing. Times were being a mother, fiancee, or caregiver took precedent over pouring into my books.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Black romance and women’s fiction author who skillfully creates love stories relatable to all. I am known for my swoon-worthy main male characters.
I also dabble in graphic design. I have designed and formatted bestselling novels. I have designed over a thousand covers, manuscripts, and print ready copies of many authors books over the years.
I think I’m most proud of the fact I have a traditional release at 25 years old. To have a nationally distributed novel was a huge accomplishment so early in my career. Burden of Love may not be my most liked book in my catalog, it still represents SO much to me.
What sets me apart from others is that I prioritize intimacy, connection, and falling in love in every book I write.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The best advice I can give to anyone who wants to become a published author and make it their full time career, stay true to your pen. In this age of social media, we are always exposed to other people’s opinions and it can negatively influence the stories we write. Do not write what you think readers want from you, write the stories that come straight from your heart.
I wish I knew to invest in my brand early on. Taking shortcuts and taking the cheap options for covers, edits, and packaging will only hinder your growth in the industry.
