Life & Work with Harmony Ayewah of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harmony Ayewah.

Hi Harmony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started in 2017, Lagos, Nigeria. My mom would always spend time getting ready for church and doing her makeup but it never quite came out right. I remember I would always go on YouTube to find makeup hacks to help improve her makeup and eventually I became her personal makeup artist which also led to me wearing makeup at the young age of 15. Other adults around me would always try to make my mom stop me from using makeup because they believed I was growing too fast but my mom saw the potential and encouraged me even further. Since then makeup became my way of self expression and a very great passion of mine, and now I use my passion to help other people feel happy and confident in themselves and how they look.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely never been a smooth road, aside from discouraging family members and friends, I also struggled financially, not being able to afford the products I needed, I struggled building a clientele as well, and being an immigrant I struggled transitioning environments and even had to learn makeup from scratch because of the difference in products and product application. But through it all, God remains faithful and I remain forever grateful.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a makeup artist/ pediatric nurse/ content creator. I specialize in editorial makeup and beauty enhancement. My goal at the end of every makeup session is for my client to look like a work of art and to feel confident in themselves while also letting their real self shine through. What I am most proud of is my ability to adapt, my creativity, my ability to make clients feel heard, feel special, and how I navigate and conquer obstacles in front of me. That is what sets me apart from others.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
God! God deserves the most credit because without him I wouldn’t be here today!
My support system which consist of my Husband, my Mom, and my best friend Juliet, these are the people who have supported me and whatever crazy ideas I’ve had. They always come through for me and they make sure they cheer me on the loudest in ANY room I enter.
My mentor, Udy, she’s the CEO of Jolena events and she’s a very smart, resilient woman who has taught me the importance of consistency and hard work in business. She’s also taught me the importance of prioritizing and advocating for your clients in business and making sure to keep whatever promise you make to people. She might not know it but she inspires me a lot, especially with her hard work and resilience
