Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Walker.
Hi Joseph, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been a practicing artist since I was in grade school starting with my love for graffiti, comics, cartoons, etc. I honestly had to find inspiration where I could. I will tell anyone today that kids cultivating imagination or being allowed to is one of the strongest things we can nurture. Learning how to grow and get better, I have always wanted to be a professional at the craft. I started exhibiting art as a practicing professional with Warhous, and a few other places, right after college around 2008. Meeting a lot of great artists and curators taught me a lot about the scene here in Houston. It wasn’t until I started doing live art shows with a group I’m a part of Tha’ Scenario Arts Crew (Tha’ S.A.C.) Under Houston DJ/ Artist Craig “BBC” Long, other artists Include Craig C “tha’ Artist, my brother Jeremy, and a few others. With the group doing live shows for hip hop concerts and local spots , it still feel unreal. These situations led me to be able to have the chance to exhibit The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, collab with other artists on murals, etc. Now I’m just trying to continue to push for stronger work for myself and to reach other cities to exhibit. My ultimate goal is to be able to create murals and exhibit in larger arts festivals like Art Basel in Miami.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One thing as a full-time artist is that you have to learn to remain a student and to be able to bounce back. When I first started to exhibit I had to learn to not take anything personal. Entering Juried competitions will not always go your way, and it’s based on preference.. be ok with not being everybody’s cup of tea.
I had to learn alot about exhibiting so I volunteered where I showed from time to time, learning how to hang work, lighting, the art of curation, knowing how to lead the eyes of the crowd when entering the room.
Just have fun which is most important. Put your work out there. Do it scared. Network with other fellow artists and taste makers. Mutual love for the craft could lead to great friendships and associates.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Mixed Media Artist, and Graphic Designer. When it comes to my artwork I like to explore different mediums. I do portraits, scenes, pop art, comics, etc. Most of the time I’m painting what I feel like, wether its for nostalgia or coming up with a series to exhibit. I am most proud of being selected for an MFAH exhibit, it made me feel like I silenced that thing that tells you that you can’t.
How do you define success?
Success is measured by completing goals and being able to see them through. No you may not get the trophy but you did the thing. Bouncing back from a No. Not stopping is successful. I have learned how to get into other arenas using my art such as Graphic Design and Illustration.
