Life & Work with Lyla Dipaul of NEW ORLEANS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyla Dipaul

Hi Lyla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a really creative and musical community. My whole family are big music lovers and my parents were even in a neighborhood band for a while. When I was in the 4th grade my older brother started to teach me how to play guitar and after that it was all I wanted to do. I started learning all my favorite songs by Taylor Swift and Green Day and performing in my hometown whenever I could. I started a songwriting journal, but mostly kept it to myself.
When I started college at Loyola University New Orleans in 2018 is when I finally found the confidence to start pursuing a career as a musician. I was surrounded by all these people who were boldly following their passions, and it inspired me to start doing the same. That’s when I got to work putting together my own band and recording my original music. I have learned so much since then, and I have been so lucky to meet really talented and gracious people to help me become a better artist.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an independent artist it is never really a smooth road. I have to fund everything myself which can be very overwhelming. There is so much that goes into releasing music, touring, and trying to promote everything in order to build a community. One of the bigger struggles is not being able to dedicate myself completely with the creative side of things. Right now it is a lot of hard work, but it’s something that I know will pay off over time. I feel determined to put myself out there and open doors for myself which is an attitude it took me a while to embrace. It can all feel really scary, but all can you do it try and then try again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an independent singer-songwriter. I think the most important part of being a musician for me is writing my own songs. I love the way people connect with their favorite songs and draw their own meaning. It is really incredible to build a community of people who can find themselves in your words. I take a lot of pride in my lyricism and I hope that it’s something that might set me apart from other people. Writing my own song’s is definitely something I am really proud of.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are so many people I have to credit that have helped me along the way! Most importantly my band; Marco Saah (drums), Mike Tenreiro (bass), Raph Zee (keyboard and trumpet), and Dylan Nails (guitar). They add so much to my music and always keep people dancing at shows. On my latest EP, I worked with a friend and producer named Riley English. She recorded everything and helped me so much to develop my sound on this most recent work. I’d also like to credit my good friend Frankie White who is such a great songwriter herself and has been such a great collaborator over the years. I’d also like to thank Manny Cazalas and Luke Nogueira (aka ORPHANBOY) who did the mixing and mastering for my last few releases. I am so lucky and grateful to work with all these people and that they believe in me! Lastly, I would credit my parents who have given me such an incredible life and never once told me to shy away from dreaming so big.
