Life & Work with Malika Maknojia of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malika Maknojia.

Hi Malika, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey with henna began more than 27 years ago, with a simple love for art and creativity. What started as something I enjoyed doing for family and friends slowly grew into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
Over the years, I continued learning, practicing, and developing my own style. I especially fell in love with bridal henna because every bride has a different story, and I love creating designs that feel personal and meaningful to her.
When I started, I never imagined that this passion would become my full-time business, Malika’s Henna Art, here in Houston. Today, I’ve had the privilege of working with more than 1,500+brides and countless families and events. I specialize in luxury bridal henna, creating custom designs using 100% natural, organic henna, and I’m especially known for the rich, authentic maroon-brown stains my brides love.
Building this business has been a journey of patience, consistency, and trust. I’ve grown through word of mouth, returning clients, vendor relationships, social media, and most importantly, the relationships I’ve built with my brides. For me, it has never been just about applying henna—it’s about being part of one of the most special moments in someone’s life.
After 27 years, I’m still learning, still creating, and still genuinely excited every time I sit down with a bride and begin designing her henna. I feel incredibly grateful that something I started out of love for art has become a career that allows me to connect with so many beautiful people and be part of their celebrations.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh my God—there have been so many struggles along the way. It definitely has not been a smooth road.
I’ve been doing henna for 27 years, and when I started, I never imagined it would become the business and passion it is today. I had to build everything from the ground up—my name, my reputation, my clientele, and most importantly, the trust of my brides.
There were many times when I had to balance being a mother, managing family responsibilities, and still finding the time and energy to grow my business. There were slow seasons, financial challenges, self-doubt, and moments when I wondered if all the hard work would really pay off.
But I never stopped. I kept learning, practicing, improving my designs, and showing up for my clients. Every difficult chapter taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of believing in myself.
Today, when I look at Malika’s Henna Art and the brides I’ve had the honor of working with, I realize that every struggle was worth it. Those challenges didn’t stop me—they helped shape me into the artist and businesswoman I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the owner and artist behind Malika’s Henna Art, specializing in luxury bridal henna and custom mehndi designs in Houston, Texas. I’ve been doing henna for 27 years, and over the years, it has become much more than a business for me—it’s something I truly love and take great pride in.
I’m best known for creating unique, custom bridal designs and, especially, for the authentic, beautiful natural stain my brides achieve. I use 100% pure, organic henna with no chemicals, preservatives, or artificial additives. Every bridal appointment is thoughtfully prepared, from the fresh henna I mix to the design I create specifically for each bride.
What sets me apart is that I don’t believe in simply copying a picture or following trends. I love listening to my brides, understanding their personality and vision, and then creating something that feels personal and completely theirs. I also bring years of experience to the entire bridal process—I understand how important timing, preparation, application, and aftercare are for achieving the best possible result.
I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with my brides and families over the years. Being part of so many important celebrations and seeing brides come back, refer their friends and family, and share their beautiful final stains means more to me than any number or award. My goal has always been to provide not just beautiful henna, but an experience that my brides remember for years.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is watching my mother create beautiful thread designs. I was always fascinated by the creativity, patience, and love that went into every design. I would sit nearby, watch her hands, and slowly became curious enough to try it myself was so hard .
Looking back, I realize those simple childhood moments planted the seed in henna designs for what would eventually become such a meaningful part of my life. What started as something I enjoyed as a child eventually grew into a passion, a career, and a business that I’m incredibly proud of today.
