Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashard Davis Baylor.
Hi Rashard, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, I graduated from Worthing High School and continued my education at Texas Southern University, where I completed two years of study. I later attended Houston Community College and earned certification as a firefighter.
After experiencing challenges finding employment in the firefighting field, I chose to serve my country by joining the United States Navy as a submariner. Assigned to the USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN-730 Gold Crew), I completed five nuclear deterrent patrols and gained extensive experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex mechanical and life-support systems. My responsibilities included electrolysis oxygen generators, CO₂ burners and scrubbers, high- and low-pressure air systems, high-pressure hydraulics, seawater and saltwater systems, as well as quality assurance and quality craftsmanship programs.
Following my military service, I transitioned into the industrial workforce, building a successful career across oil and gas facilities, chemical plants, and healthcare environments. Starting as a maintenance technician, I steadily advanced through leadership positions before ultimately serving as a Facility Manager for one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals.
Throughout my career, I discovered a passion for maintenance and facilities management, driven by a commitment to accountability, reliability, and operational excellence. Equally important has been my dedication to developing people, building high-performing teams, and investing in others so they can grow professionally and personally.
Today, I am the owner of my own mechanical services business, where I continue to apply decades of technical expertise, leadership experience, and a people-first approach to delivering exceptional results for clients while helping develop the next generation of skilled professionals.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not always been smooth, but it has not been overly rugged either. In many ways, life is what you make of it. I live by a few mottos that have guided me throughout my career and personal journey: Semper Gumby (“always flexible”), It is what it is, Trust, but verify, and Trust the process.
Many of my struggles have centered around identifying the right education and certifications needed to be successful, learning how to network effectively, and building meaningful professional relationships. Networking can be especially challenging when you’re just entering an industry and trying to establish yourself. Another major challenge has been building a strong reputation and earning the trust of others who are willing to take a chance on you, whether as an employee, leader, or vendor. Over time, I’ve learned that success is built through consistency, reliability, and a commitment to doing quality work while maintaining strong relationships.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Senior Facilities and Capital Projects Leader with more than 15 years of progressive experience driving operational excellence, infrastructure reliability, and capital improvement programs across healthcare, institutional, industrial, transportation, consulting, and military sectors. Proven track record leading facility operations, facility condition assessments, deferred maintenance strategies, asset lifecycle planning, and multimillion-dollar capital projects within complex, mission-critical environments.
Recognized for translating technical expertise into strategic business decisions that enhance facility performance, mitigate risk, optimize budgets, and support long-term organizational objectives. Experienced in contractor and vendor management, construction oversight, infrastructure renewal, executive-level reporting, and stakeholder engagement. Adept at leading cross-functional teams and delivering projects that meet operational, regulatory, and financial goals while ensuring compliance with NFPA, Joint Commission, OSHA, ASTM, and industry best practices.
Among my greatest professional achievements are earning the prestigious Naval Submarine Warfare Insignia (“Dolphins”), representing technical proficiency, leadership, and operational excellence in one of the military’s most demanding environments, and completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management at age 37, demonstrating perseverance, discipline, and a lifelong commitment to professional growth and continuous improvement.
This combination of military experience, field expertise, and strategic facilities leadership enables me to effectively bridge operations, capital planning, and organizational objectives to drive sustainable results.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Houston’s culture is unlike anywhere else in the world, and that’s one of the things I’ve always loved most about this city. Despite being one of the largest cities in the country, Houston always felt like a big small town. People looked out for one another, relationships mattered, and no matter where you went, there was a strong sense of community and pride.
Growing up, I used to tell people I was from the greatest country, the best state, and the best city in the world. There was something special about Houston’s character. It was diverse, hardworking, unpretentious, and welcoming. It was a city built by people who believed in opportunity and weren’t afraid to work for it.
While I appreciate Houston’s growth and the recognition it continues to receive, I sometimes miss the way it used to feel. As the city has become more of a tourist destination and a major metropolitan hub, some of that small-town charm seems to have faded. The rapid development, increased traffic, and corporate influence can make parts of Houston feel less personal and more commercialized.
