Today we’d like to introduce you to Veda Cavitt.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Portia Southern Foundation was established in October 2015 as a non-profit organization, geared to advocate for families against Domestic Violence. Portia Southern was a silent victim of Domestic Violence until her death. She graduated High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. Upon completion, she went on to pursue a career with the US Navy. She leaves behind two children. I. Veda Cavitt am the mother and the voice of Portia Southern, advocating for all those victims and survivors that have been silent.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been an easy plight. For so many years people would not speak about Domestic Violence publicly, until the “Me Too Movement”. The hardest part of Advocating, is getting people to listen, believe, and trust, especially those that are in a position to make a difference and make a change.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Advocate for victims and survivors. I will help find protection, shelter, and resources for those in need. I will scream to the Heavens until someone listens. We collect resources and donations throughout the year, and distribute them as needed. We also believe in empowering our youth, to teach them that they can break the silence and not become a statistic. For the past 4 years we have hosted a Scholarship Gala. These Scholarships are given to Graduating High School Seniors on April 29th (Portia’s Birthday) every year.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
This is no walk in the park. You must have patience and a passion for loving and caring for others. This is especially hard when is is all volunteer work. You must have a balance between work and home, I would also suggest partnering with other non-profits that share the same vision and passion. This gives you the opportunity share so much more, and build community relationships.
