Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Mattox.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alyssa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hello! My name is Alyssa Mattox. I am a 19 year-old professional licensed esthetician/business owner. I specialize in facials, intimate waxing, handmade organic skincare, and body contouring. I started off in the beauty industry as a makeup artist at 16 years-old. I would show my talent by wearing a full face of makeup everyday. As time went on I started to develop cystic acne, and I would wear makeup to cover it up which only made it worse. When I would take my makeup off at the end of the day, I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. I soon decided to leave makeup alone to start focusing on my skin’s health and junior year of high school.
Towards the end of my senior year of high school I realized that I didn’t want to go through another four years of school of school only to come out with an entry level job making an entry level salary. I was already employed, and going to school full-time wouldn’t allow me to make as much money. I didn’t even know what I would be going to college for. After graduating high school, I didn’t know what I was going to do moving forward, but I knew my calling was in the beauty industry so I enrolled in beauty school. As soon as I finished, I signed up for my tests’ to become licensed and passed them both on the first try. My first month officially as an esthetician was March, that was also the month that the city shut down. I only had enough money saved to pay my rent for my shop for one month. I started to think that Covid-19 would be the death of my business so I stared to fall into a depression. I thought all my hard work was going to go down the drain.
On April 1st, I spend my last $400 to pay for my rent for my shop. The city was closed so I didn’t get to work that month. I went to my mother for guidance, she told me to do what I do best “be creative.” Shortly after, my creative juices started flowing! I came up with an idea to make up for not working the month of April. I created custom skin care boxes “Billion Dollar Skin Survival Boxes.” I made 40 boxes and sold them for $35. I didn’t expect them to sell out as quickly as they did. I got orders from all over the country which expanded my businesses online presence. It so felt empowering to solve that dilemma on my own. It made me realize my potential. My first day back to work was May 8th, and from that day forward I have been booked and busy ever since!
My business is doing exceptional considering I’ve only been in business for four months! I went from a being in a sublease to having a suite of my own, from living off of my parents to providing for myself and from breaking down at desperate times to finding solutions to the problem at hand. For me, the city shutting down was a blessing in disguise. It made me grow up and made me realize that I needed to be prepared for whatever hardships destiny has in store for me. I am forever grateful for my experiences and my supports for molding into who I am today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing great comes at a small price. I’ve sacrificed sleep, time an energy and my social life to build up my business. When I first started making my skin care products I struggled to make any sales. The only people who would support my business was my family and close friends. On my first batch of products I spend over $400 and I only sold two products. My next batch I spend over $600 and I didn’t even sell one product. No one took my business seriously when I first started, I had to earn all of my respect.
The Bawdy Bar – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Bawdy Bar is a quiet and serine environment where one could come and receive effective skin care treatments and products, waxing services, or “Bawdy Contouring” (a non-invasive way to burn fat and tighten skin without cutting or surgery.) You can also combine certain services such as “Face+Bawdy Treatment” which includes a facial treatment and a non invasive bawdy contouring session, “facial+Vagacial” which includes a facial treatment, Brazilian wax and a Vagacial (facial for your Vagina), “The Kitty Combo” which includes a Brazilian wax and a Vagacial, “face+booty treatment” which includes a facial treatment and a booty facial, or “The Booty combo“ which includes a non invasive butt enhancement and a non invasive cellulite reduction treatment. I specialize in all things face and body!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is financial stability and happiness. Being able to do what I love and get paid for it is honestly a blessing.
