Today we’d like to introduce you to Amin Safari. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Three-time Award Winner Amin Safari has been fascinated by guitar since he first saw one at age six. However, it was not till a few years later that he played his first note on the guitar. After a few years of self-taught lessons, Amin entered Folk University in Sweden, where he received a degree in classical music under instruction of an amazing teacher, Tom Houwing. He was also very interested in science and entered the Ph.D. program/Forskarskolan in Umea University And received a Bachelor of Science in Histopathology and a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering/Molecular Biology. After traveling throughout Europe, Amin arrived in Spain and fell in love with the art of flamenco. Although he pursued a scientific career as a molecular biologist at Umea University in Sweden & Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, the passion for music was always there. He filled his spare time by giving private guitar lessons and also performing with famous Iranian artists. Throughout his years working as a guitarist, Amin never stopped composing and arranging his songs, into which flamenco elements slowly began to make their way. He created the entertainment company called EQRecords, which includes Lessons, recording & performances. Amin’s inspirations are renowned flamenco artists such as Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo, Gipsy Kings, Jesse Cook, and Ottmar Leibert.
The high-energy rhythms and passionate melodies captivate the audience of all ages and race. His last four albums, “A Different Tune, Pasion de la Guitarra, Luna, Amor, and La Rumba,” are a fusion of flamenco with otherworldly sounds.
The album “Luna” was a recipient of the Akademia award for “Best Latin Instrumental” in November 2015.
The album “La Rumba” was a recipient of the Akademia Award for “Best World Beat” in September 2017.
The newly released album “Valencia” was a recipient of the Akademia award for “Best World Beat” in August 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many lessons & challenges along the way and it hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I first started playing music, I had to learn on my own. YouTube was not available at that time! I used books to learn music until I got accepted into Folk Music University in Umea, Sweden.
Along the way I have learnt that having quality equipment and an understanding of their proper function can really have an impact on the performance. I have been incorporating that in my performances and it has produced a great effect on my audience. My love of music has always pushed me forward no matter the challenges.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well, I am a professional musician, songwriter, and recording artist. My style of music is fusion flamenco and world music! I am known for being an excellent entertainer and band leader. I have been lucky enough to meet & perform with many great musicians in my career thus far, both in US and Europe. I am most proud of my love of music, that gives me so much energy, which I transfer to my audience! When I play music, everything else melts away.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes! The COVID lockdown was an eye-opener! It forced me to develop my online presence! I started having online lessons for my students and creating video lessons to share with the public. I think at that time everyone was looking at learning something new which was great, because now I have students all over the world. I also spent alot of time in my studio working on my new album “Valencia,” which was released recentky and was given an award for “Best World Beat.”
