Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Capel.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I always had an interest in art as a child. I would come up with stories and illustrate them even then. In high school, I wrote and illustrated for the school’s literary magazine. In 2002 I got my BA in English from Rowan University in NJ.
I continued to be a part of a lot of art related events in my hometown. I did murals and sold artwork at the yearly fall arts festival. About 3 years ago my husband and I decided we wanted to move from southern New Jersey to Texas. It has been one of the most positive decisions we have ever made. It has been a pleasure to meet so many other artistic people in the community. Since moving here I have found critique groups and other artistic communities that have helped me hone my skills both as a writer and an artist. I have written 8 children’s picture books and am actively seeking representation as an author-illustrator.
Please tell us about your art.
Since the birth of my first child 11 years ago, I realized my connection to children’s picture books. Reading to her each night brought back to me a sense of wonder. I studied new picture books and revisited classic ones. That is when my work began to shift to creating and illustrating my own original stories. I tend to write stories about animals. Many of them are about giraffes or sheep. Most of them are about friendships or self-discovery.
I also have some background in comic book work. I will occasionally create short comics and sometimes teach sequential art to children. I want people to feel a connection to my art. I hope that it brings people a better understanding an acceptance of themselves and their flaws. I hope they can see in it something that helps them accept others as well. If you are a giraffe, stand tall!
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice is that your work doesn’t always need to be deadly serious. Some of us aren’t cut out for high drama and a masterpiece doesn’t always have to appeal to adult audiences.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best place to support my work is through my twitter or Facebook.
