
Today we’d like to introduce you to Asma Gowher.
Asma, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Asma Gowher, creator/owner of TRIFLES, aka Mrs. Trifle. In 2013 my husband (Zulfi, aka Mr. Trifle) and I were blessed with our second baby boy who was born with a disability. In an effort to leave my day job and spend more time with the kids, we created TRIFLES, a dessert catering business. I have a passion for creating beautiful and unique desserts. The intent behind the business is to create a foothold for our children’s futures and provide employment for other disabled individuals.
We took a break in 2017 (until very recently) after Mr. Trifle had a heart attack. In the meantime, we took care of our family, moved to a different part of town, and had our third baby boy! (Tried for a girl, blessed with a healthy boy.) Based on popular demand, during the mandated quarantine we decided to bring the business back and expand our dessert line. We want to grow into a brick and mortar bakery shop!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not a smooth road at all. We had lots of roadblocks along the way. We had lots of professional struggles as well as personal. One of the things we noticed quite often was that most people do not know what our star dessert is. Trifle is a traditional English dessert, made up of sponge cake or ladyfingers, custard, fruit, and jello. We put our own spin on the traditional trifle and made it unique. Our “original” trifle consists of layers of pound cake, vanilla custard, fresh strawberries and bananas and hand whipped cream. It is a sweet, creamy and sophisticated dessert that melts in your mouth and makes your taste buds dance.
I am a self taught baker. I’ve learned to create different recipes and perfected them based on feedback from family and friends. I’ve learned to run all parts of a moving business by myself. The dessert creations, social media, marketing, packaging, etc are all done as a one woman show. Given all that, I have to give credit to my biggest supporter, Mr. Trifle. He has been by my side from the beginning and helps me behind the scenes where he can, especially with the kids. He even helps by putting packaging material together (sometimes incorrectly!) and does deliveries! Without him I wouldn’t be able to achieve the success I have today.

TRIFLES specializes in mini desserts. Our main dessert line is trifle. Variety of flavors with different types of cake base (pound cake, angel food cake, brownie, etc), layered with flavored custard, fresh fruit, and hand whipped cream. We also carry a line of chocolate mousse, mini tarts and most recently, French macarons.
Trifle isn’t a common dessert and we pride ourselves in having created a unique dessert line that is made from scratch. We cook everything in house, from the cake, to the custard, and always hand whipped cream. Not only does our dessert look pretty but because it is made from scratch it tastes so so good. 🙂
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe in a lot of hard work to get to where you are. I also believe in what is destined for you will always happen. We have worked hard to get to where we are but we also know that certain things happened in our life for a reason. We can only continue to work towards our goal each and every day and pray that our destiny aligns with our goals.
