Today we’d like to introduce you to Barb Boyett.
Barb, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started the clinic in 2003 with 4 partners and 1 other employee. We rented a small space in Katy and quickly filled it. We consistently grew, adding more staff and increased patient load. My husband joined our staff in 2006 to manage all the billing and collections as we continued to grow. We eventually grew out of our space and were able to build a new larger space with a pool and moved into it in 2008. Gradually, my husband and I were able to buy out our other partners and became sole owners in November 2015. We recently opened a second location in Katy in July 2017.
Our business practice has been focused on serving the community by providing physical therapy in a personal and friendly environment that truly fosters HOPE. Our staff works hard to develop that personal touch to make everyone feel cared for. We have been blessed with an amazing staff that is such a joy to work with every day. Our physical therapists are absolutely top! We have 15 therapists currently, 7 full time and 8 part-time. Six of our therapists have completed a doctorate degree in physical therapy and one is currently working on hers.
Their backgrounds and credentials vary greatly. We have therapists who have worked over 25 years and we have new graduates. We have two therapists who recently completed their manual therapy certification, however, all our therapists are trained in and use manual therapy. Three of our therapists are trained in dry needling. Three therapists are trained to work with pelvic floor dysfunction, several therapists work with children, one therapist is certified in Aquatics. All our therapists are trained to assess movement and provide key corrective exercises and manual therapy techniques to correct the dysfunction and restore normal function and mobility.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We opened our second location in July 2017. Shortly after that, Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston/Katy area in August 2017. Both businesses suffered significant loss of patient visits and income and it has taken over 4 months to recover. We are still not to where we were a year ago, but we are continuing to move forward.
In that time, we struggled with the decision to reduce staff, but we were able to maintain our current staff and even added a new therapist that we had previously committed to hire. God provided and through income when down significantly, we have been able to pay our bills and staff and continue to serve the community.
Please tell us about Hope Rehab Katy.
We are a private outpatient physical therapy clinic. We are completely privately owned with no physician or corporate ownership.
We specialize in personalized, hands-on care. Our patients become like family. We want them to enjoy coming to physical therapy, regardless of the pain they may be experiencing. We develop relationships with our patients and they know we care about them.
Our therapists are amazing! They are highly skilled in manual therapy, in assessing mobility and functional problems and in designing plans to return patients to their highest level of function possible. They have a wide variety of skills and we have a huge variety in our patient load.
I am very blessed in that I have not had to advertise for any of my therapists, which is very unusual for a PT clinic. My husband and I firmly believe that our clinic is God’s ministry to the Katy/Houston area and we are just managing it. He brings the staff to us as we need.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up in South Dakota, living out in the country with a freedom that is unusual today. We spent our days outside, whether in the summer or winter.
