Today we’d like to introduce you to Benson Edokpayi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m also known as Bensonedo. I am a photographer and creative consultant from Lagos, Nigeria. I’ve been a photographer for four years now, it’s been a beautiful journey. When I started, I got a lot of inspiration from my friends and my surroundings, growing up in Lagos taught me how to make the best of what I have no matter how small, so that helped. I remember in 2016 when two of my friends (also photographers) would share one lens for our shoots. We’d take turns depending on when one of us needed it. that was the beauty of it. I loved how we pushed ourselves individually and inspired one another. Over the four years, I’ve collaborated and worked with different people and organizations such as the Nativeland Concert, Smino, Odunsi (The Engine), Lady Donli, etc.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the journey has not been smooth, when I started I wasn’t really taken seriously so that pushed me to practice a lot. overtime it definitely got better. As of recent though, I haven’t really been inspired to take pictures like I used to, I feel like it’s because of how focused I am with my schoolwork. It’s kinda hard to balance both, you know? Hopefully, my inspiration will be back in no time. I’m also working on something very special, so I’m taking my time, trust me, it’ll be worth the wait!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a photographer/creative consultant/stylist. Photography is the main aspect of my work hence, my area of specialization. I curate, direct and shoot projects for my personal use or for my clientele. Collaboration is very important to me as I try to brainstorm and think freely with each and everyone I work with. This creates an organic relationship between me and my clients. Bouncing ideas off one another is a crucial part of bringing out the best results from a project.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity. A photographer finding his/her niche is similar to a musician finding his/her sound. Both take time, patience and dedication. When I started, it took me seven months to one year to actually know my style of photography. It’s what I gravitated to, so I just stuck with it and developed it. I’d say my style of photography is experimental as I tend to play around with different silhouettes and structures with my work. Being original is key to creating beautiful art.
