Meet Bob Trevorrow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob Trevorrow.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bob. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I discovered my love for ceramics while taking a wheel throwing class at the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin. I had been working in carpentry and construction and I was excited by the immediacy of wheel has thrown pottery and inspired by its potential to express a handcrafted modern aesthetic. My method could be called “slow pottery” as I take time and work carefully on the individual piece. I find myself now stretching back to my fabrication roots with a line of touch sensor lamps, and I am interested in teaming up with architects and designers on custom architectural lighting and other projects.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a full time potter is a difficult way to make a living. I was patient with myself while I was learning and perfecting my ware and I initially thought that I would get faster. I have since learned that I am best suited for creating unique and finely crafted ware as opposed to mass production and I am focusing my efforts on developing my market. As difficult and, at times, stressful as making a living as a craft artist can be, there is nothing else I would rather be doing.

Bob Trevorrow Ceramics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is a one man show, and I wear all the hats. My specialty is high fired, wheel thrown ceramics with a focus on functional pieces with a modern aesthetic. I see a lot of highly decorated pottery being made by other potters and so I strive to make ceramic objects with a clean and slightly minimalist look that still retain the handmade uniqueness and charm.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I completed my first wholesale order!
