Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Dixon.
Brent, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love of music started from my grandmother’s living room growing up and listening to all the albums and 45 records. I’ve always been interested in the mechanics of how music is created. The science of it. This passion led to me attending the Art Institute of Dallas back when they had an Audio/Video production course in the ’90s. Then it went to collecting recording equipment, building project studios and establishing my production company Divided Souls Ent. As the internet disrupted the “business” of music, I started focusing my energy into sound design and tech with led to my partner and I forming 12 Bit Soul. Over the years, we’ve worked with two of the biggest companies in the Music software industry which has given us an insight into the mechanics of how to create and market content for the users.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, but that’s welcome. You learn and grow from setbacks. Logistics can be an issue because we have team members in other states. Creating a system mitigates the struggles long term. We’ve learned to be consistent with delivering top quality content on schedule and being professional.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
The company is 12 Bit soul. We create music software content for producers. The name is derived from the classic Hip Hop drum machine, the SP12oo which is known for its lofi gritty sound that a niche group loves. I’m most proud of being free to create and the journey building relationships along the way. Our vast taste in music and historical knowledge of genres sets us apart from others. Our next goal is to use music as a tool to teach younger kids sound designing and music technology. I’ve been in talks with a few media directors at local community colleges so we’re building that relationship. Looking to partner up with businesses that share the vision so hit me up if interested. This industry has a huge upside.
What were you like growing up?
I was an energetic, outgoing person that was heavy into sports, music, and reading.
