Meet Brian Vogel of East Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Vogel.

Hi Brian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved photography. As a kid, I used to run around with 35mm point-and-shoots or those old 110 cartridge film cameras. After a week or so, we’d head to the store to pick up the developed photos, and it always felt like tangible magic, seeing those moments appear on paper for the first time.

My first real camera was an Argus C3 Matchmatic that my grandpa gave me. I had no idea how to use it, but that didn’t stop me from photographing everything: nature, my friends skating, anything that caught my eye. I was hooked.

After some time, I joined the Army, and that’s when I started experimenting beyond snapshots, trying to create more intentional, thought-out images and concepts. In 2007, during my deployment to Afghanistan, I ordered a Nikon D40x and a Vivitar 285v flash. I’d take a picture, adjust a setting, and shoot again just to see what changed. That’s how I taught myself shutter speed, aperture, and ISO through pure curiosity and trial and error.

I carried that camera everywhere, on missions and around our small base. Each week, our Public Affairs Officer would submit three images to be published in a military journal. One week, two of the photos were mine, and the third was a photo of me on a mission. That was the moment I knew this was what I wanted to do with my life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
All things considered, I feel incredibly fortunate. I spent many years struggling to make ends meet, but over time I managed to build a business and a loyal client base that’s allowed me to sustain myself doing what I love. It’s taken a lot of hard work, long nights, and countless deadlines, but I can’t complain. I’m grateful that my career and my passion are one and the same.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a commercial and advertising photographer specializing in portraits and product imagery. I love meeting new people, collaborating with diverse teams, and bringing creative ideas to life. My work is often recognized for its vibrant, engaging style that highlights both the lifestyle and details behind each project. What sets me apart is my adaptability. The ability to deliver strong, compelling images in any environment or situation.

What’s next?
Over the past few years, we’ve been focusing more on video and artistic projects. In the coming year, I plan to create a series of short films to challenge myself creatively. I’m also working on expanding my business and taking my client base to the next level.
