Estrella’s was opened in 2006 and since day one has had a lot of traffic walking thru the doors; at some point, even about 120 walk ins in one day. Now the family owns two successful barbershops in the northeast of Houston and in Crosby, TX. It was started by Candy, the owner, and 3 years later his middle son, David, joined the team and 3 years after that her younger son joined the barbershop.
One of the key points that has kept Estrella’s at a busy state is a God-fearing woman and her family who has put everything, from day one, in his will. From there a great smile, customer service, hard work, long hours, attention to detail in the haircuts, up to date on new trends and styles has kept the barbershop busy and the customers coming back.
Candy started the business and kept it going hard for three years with only two employees who had a wait time of an hour or two at times. Once David joined the team the barbershop flourished even more, he brought new ideas and styles that were only being done in other parts of the states, he started doing designs and became very well known in the area for his creativity and style in cutting hair to the point that to get a haircut by him there was a wait time of about 6 hours. After 8 years of working for his mom, 5 which he was the manager, he decided to open his own barbershop in Crosby and now with almost two years in business has been very successful. After David left his younger brother, Abraham, took over their mom’s salon and became the manager.
Candy had to leave the hair industry after 4 years of having opened the barbershop to pursue her calling, to be a Pastor. After 7 years, the family now owns a local church who has helped numerous people in the community from troubled marriages, who now are still together and going strong, to teenagers who were on drugs and now are law abiding citizens in society. Why mention this? Because most of these people came into the barbershop asking for help.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every business has its ups and downs just as in life but with God, with perseverance and vision to do great things every obstacle can be overcome.
Customers have never been a problem, what has been a problem is the employees. Having to find good barbers or stylists with skill, with a vision to succeed, that have passion for the craft and most of all have a great attitude is hard to get. One of the things that has always been in our criteria when hiring is attitude and passion not skill, although is always a plus and we look for it as well is not our priority. Why not skill? we can teach someone how to cut hair and how to be detailed and be a skilled barber but to teach them attitude; to see the glass half full instead of half empty, to see that an obstacle is just that and obstacle and can be overcome if you keep moving forward, to teach them how to change their mentality that they are capable of much more than what they are already doing is much harder than to teach them how to cut hair.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Estrella Barbershop story. Tell us more about the business.
We strive for excellence in our craft which is taking care of people’s hair needs, from the dad to the mom to the children. In our Houston location, we take care of the whole family, whether is male or female, dying hair or simply a haircut. In our Crosby location, we take care of the male clientele only.
We specialize in the men’s grooming and styling, bringing back the old style of barbering in cutting hair and in shaving. We give our male clientele the experience of their life when coming to get a hot towel shave using only the finest products and the cutthroat razor for a smoother shave.
We are updated on all styles of haircuts and if the customers want something more custom and extravagant we will do that as well. David has a creative eye for designs and detailed work that has even done portraits on people’s heads.
