Meet Candice Renee of The Hair Odyssey in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Renee.

Candice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off in 2003 in my hometown St. Louis, Missouri. My first salon setting was in my mother’s basement. At the age of 18 fresh out of high school. I had a very vivid dream about me being a hairstylist. I woke up the next morning and decided I would go to Cosmetology School instead of Community college. I have worked in the Beauty Industry for almost 18 years. I finally became a Professional Hairstylist in 2013. This time I took my career very serious. I worked in one of St. Louis hottest Beauty Salons called St. Louis Stylez. Where I learned tons of new techniques and had booked schedule. I finally decided to step out on faith and relocated to Houston in 2017. Trusting God, I came to Houston with no clientele at all; starting Completely over. I’ve worked in two salons with some of the best hairstylist, taking my skills to another level. Today, I am a Master Hairstylist/Owner at The Hair Odyssey. In three years span I have managed to create a brand for all ages and races. My clientele is constantly growing and my schedule is filling up fast. Moving to Houston was one of the best moves I’ve ever made.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t really have many struggles that I feel weren’t necessary lessons. So, I will say it has been a very smooth ride. Even starting out, I’ve always had a nice clientele. My biggest struggle was when I came to Houston and actually had to interact with new and unfamiliar people. I grew my clientele by word of mouth back home. Being in a new city where no one knows me; I had to step out my comfort zone. I definitely struggled with that. But I would pray before I went out to network and also began to utilize social media a lot. One of my biggest struggles throughout the years was managing my money. Learning to budget with years of bad habits will definitely make you feel as if things aren’t working out financially.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I don’t like to put limits on my talents. However, I cater more to women’s hair. Specializing in Short haircuts/styles, Long hair, Natural and Relaxed hair. Weaves and hair coloring. I am best known for Infamous Finger waves! I love doing finger waves. I am most proud that I am creating a brand that will give woman confidence and getting them to trust Hairstylist again. What sets me apart from others is the love I have for my craft. I know my craft was created just for me. My passion shows through not only my work but the way I interact with my clients and other hairstylist. I service all types of genres rather it’s edgy or simply. Bold or natural. I’m willing to do it all.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always a leader, creative, outgoing, very vocal, caring, funny, I love having fun. I use to struggle with my self-esteem and confidence at times. A tad bossy and selfish. I’ve always had a passion for success with in the Beauty Industry. Fashion, Hair and Nails have always been at the top of my list since a young teen. Some of my Favorite things to do are Dancing, Roller Skating and swimming.
