Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Williams.
Corey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A friend of mine wanted to do a clothing and food drive for the winter of 2012. He would always push it off. One day, I just took over planning the event and sent out the time, date and location. During the time of the event, it opened my eyes to a lot of the things in my past that I wanted to help others with. We then created Hope4Houston. We used it briefly then changed the name. We got everything started but everybody was so busy with their personal lives that we stopped. Around 2016 when all the violence was going on, I wanted to get people together to try to figure out how can we bring hope to our communities so that we don’t have those same issues. I then met two others that was as passionate about it as I was. We figured we needed a name for the organization we were trying to create, then the Hope4Houston name came out of my mouth. Everybody loved it so that’s the name I stuck with.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish the road was smooth. There are trials and tribulations in anything you do. Especially, when you’re dealing with a mixed group of individuals. It’s hard trying to get support from people these days. I’ve even had people walk away because of many different things. So, I’ll say my biggest struggle is getting the support you really need these days.
Please tell us about Hope4Houston.
Hope4Houston is a 5013c certified non-profit organization. We specialize in community outreach. We’re known for the event we have throughout the year such as Hope Day, Hope Thru Hoops, Feeding Hope, Learning Hope, Charity Kickball, Charity Flag Football, and Neighborhood Cleanup. Me personally im most proud of the Hope Day event. I feel like the things that sets me apart from others is I was one of those kids before that we help out. I always wanted to come back to the “hood” and look out for my people. I wanted to show the kids it’s a lot more to life than just the typical things they look forward to.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing outside. It was so much fun out there. Back then, everybody played together daily. People were your family even if you weren’t related. The neighborhood looked out for each other.
