Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Elum.
Deborah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started with a poem I wrote in the sixth grade at A&M Consolidated Middle School in College Station, Texas. My English teacher helped me discover my passion for writing after I wrote my first poem for a class assignment.
In 1998, I started writing my first book, A Church with Spots and Wrinkles. That experience helped me learn about the publishing industry. After that, people contacted me asking “Can you help me publish my book?” or “How do I go about publishing my book?” That is how I started my own publishing and consulting company. My son, Brian, named the company, All That Productions, Inc.
Since then, I have written six books, published over twenty-five inspirational, poetry, and autobiography titles for other authors. In addition, I established humorous columns for several magazines.
I have appeared as a featured guest on TBN “Praise the Lord” and Daystar Television Network “Celebration” broadcasts as well as numerous radio programs and newspapers. I received American Christian Writers Association’s “Writer of the Year” award for my humorous book, A Church with Spots and Wrinkles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business always has its own set of challenges. One of the challenges in the publishing industry is knowing what steps to take after completing a manuscript. For my first book, once I completed it, I decided to send it off to a large publishing house. They picked up the story and were going to publish the book. However, when they sent it back to me, they had changed the manuscript in a direction I really did not want it to go. I just took the project back. I really did not know what to do next. I learned how to start a publishing company. After I raised the money, I published my first title. The road was not smooth but each challenge taught me how to overcome obstacles.
All That Productions – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
All That Productions, Inc. is a publishing and consulting service to the faith-based market. We publish children, poetry, autobiography, and inspirational titles. One of my favorite roles in publishing is editing manuscripts.
Outside of my own writing, I am proud of helping fellow authors share their stories with the world.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was honored to receive the American Christian Writers Association’s “Writer of the Year” award for my book, A Church with Spots and Wrinkles.
Also, I am honored to release of my first children’s picture book, Miss McDoogle Has the Giggles. The book is a tribute to the teachers who inspired me to become a writer.
