Today we’d like to introduce you to Dequilla Bratcher.
Dequilla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a rather large family in the Sunnyside area of Houston, Texas with both my parents, three brothers and one sister. We did everything together, shared rooms and everything else. We even had bible study as a family most days in the summer and every weekend before we did anything else. I didn’t feel like I had any individuality so I always looked for a creative outlet. I’ve been creating since I could remember.
After my mom passed away in 2009 it completely shocked my world. I needed a creative outlet and what started out as a way to cope with my grief turned into my true passion. After creating my first custom cake, I fell completely in love. I started to do tons of research, I watched baking shows, and I took a baking class at my local craft store to perfect my craft. A year later, I had created so many cakes that I could barely keep count. I love it!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not! I believe that with any business you will experience ups and downs but that is what fuels the fire for me. Each time something goes left, I come back so much stronger and wiser.
Fear is so paralyzing. Fear has been and is still sometimes the object I have to overcome. Hearing no or feeling rejection is a very hard thing for me. However, I know that nothing good comes from our comfort zones so I constantly push myself out of that box inch by inch.
I just had my first child in 2018 which pushes me even more. I have to be great for her! Balancing being a wife, mother, business owner and author is tricky but I think I have it figured out now. Speaking of that, my first baking book is now available. This book is an outpouring of my passion, dedication, and hard work! This too was a challenge yet so much fun to write as it contains my favorite recipes that I hold near and dear to my heart.
Please tell us about Delicacies by Dee.
Delicacies by Dee is a custom cakery. Meaning, I create customized cakes and dessert tables including 3D cakes that are realistic and may not look like a cake to the naked eye. All of my cakes are baked in house and are decorated by myself with premium ingredients.
We do it all and 10% of all cakes go to our local church and religious organizations receive a discount as well. So I’m most proud of that and I believe that this along with my attention to detail and tireless effort that I put into giving my cousins what they want sets me apart. I call my customers cousins because after making their special celebrations even more memorable, they become family to me. Once I’ve created a cake for you, I will become your forever Cake Lady or cousin. It happens every time.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The only thing I would do differently is start sooner!
