Meet Desiry Sevilla of Hair by Desy in South Friendswood Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiry Sevilla.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Desiry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was in high school, I had a passion for hair & makeup! I wanted to be apart of the Cosmetology program, but due to financial circumstances, I wasn’t able to take the class. I graduated high school, attended a community college pursuing a business degree while working full time as a Social Security Case Manager. As the years went by, I still had a burning desire to pursue the career of my dreams (HairStylist).

One day, I finally decided it was time to fulfill my lifelong passion, so I made an appointment to tour Paul Mitchell the school, I fell in love the second I walked in & I knew this was my calling. Upon enrollment, I was informed of another location opening up in the Houston area, closer to home. The new school was awarding 10 full-ride scholarships, to be eligible, I had to provide high school transcripts and an essay describing why I should be chosen for the scholarship. A few weeks later, I was informed that I was 1 of the 10 who would be awarded the scholarship. A year later, I graduated Paul Mitchell the School, obtained my cosmetology license, and started working immediately at a salon near The Galleria Area. I started my apprentice program, after 6 months, I was on the floor taking new clients! I worked at this salon for a year, before decided to branch out on my own!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any other job, there were some challenges. When I first started taking clients, it was nerve-racking, I knew I was capable and ready to take this big step, but I still had my doubts. Also, around this time, hurricane Harvey hit Houston, and unfortunately my home was affected. I had to be out of work a few weeks to get settled into our temporary home, and start repairs on our house, my husband, kids & I, lived in a hotel for about 8 months. During this time, I was not able to work full time, we only had one vehicle to get both of us to work and kids to school. Meaning, I was not getting the experience necessary to further my skills. This was a very challenging time for me, as I had to turn away many clients.

Hair by Desy – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Right now, I rent a salon suite. I specialize in balayage/blonding services. I’m known for my blending skills! I love anything that has to do with color! I’m most proud of the honesty and knowledge I provide to my clients! The integrity of my client’s hair is always my main priority. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not in this industry to make a quick buck, but rather to make at a slight difference I’m my client’s life, just by enhancing their beauty a little more!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was taking the leap from working in a salon to owning my own business. I was told I wasn’t good enough and wouldn’t make it on my own, and to come this far, is truly surreal.
