Today we’d like to introduce you to Dineka Young.
Dineka, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Skincare and skin health has always been my thing. My mom, being the Capricorn that she is, instilled in my sisters and I the importance of hygiene and skincare early. I played volleyball and did ballet throughout my teen years, and there was not one day I went without washing my face right after practice. My mom didn’t allow me to wear makeup at all (unless it was mascara), so that forced me to want to take care of my skin and to look my best in my natural state.
I was infatuated with skin health and the beauty of it. I began to express my love for skincare on social media as early as Myspace days. I would have my 10th-grade classmates asking me for skincare advice. The exigency for skincare tips only grew when everyone in my age group moved from Myspace to Facebook, to twitter, and now Instagram.
I always wanted to custom make my own all-natural products, but I never really considered making skincare my profession it was just a hobby for so long. It wasn’t until May of 2017, a couple of months after my very stressful, corporate accounting job announced a surplus, that I realized that that was what I was supposed to be doing. I was down in the dumps about being laid off one night, 20 minutes into my strenuous nighttime skin regimen when my boyfriend says very impatiently from bed “that’s what you need to. You need to get it how you live, and you live for skincare.” it was like a lightbulb came on in my head. he was right! (why didn’t I think of that). I immediately started searching for schools and programs to enroll in to start my new profession. I understood that night that maintaining skin health was my calling.
SKINBYDI spa and studio has been open and taking clients for three weeks now. And it’s such an incredible feeling to wake up and do what I genuinely love every day. Finishing school and completing all of the background work to get it up and running over the past year was so intense but soooo worth it. I wouldn’t change anything!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It actually has been extremely smooth. I was nervous about transitioning from my office job to entrepreneurship, but I am so thankful to not have run into any roadblocks. The hardest thing was actually deciding to take that leap, and then actually jumping.
Skin By Di – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an all-natural esthetician + nutritionist. I cater to all things skincare inside and outside of the body. Whatever ailments are occurring inside of the body will manifest themselves onto your skin in due time. When working with my clients I aim to achieve clear, healthy skin by fighting the issues head-on from both ends. I only use clean, predominantly plant-based products that are free of all of the unnecessaries, as I like to call them, that can absorb into your bloodstream and cause major issues as serious as cancer. I only use products with safe ingredients on myself as well as my clients.
I specialize in pigmentation and skin texture. As a person of color it is 10x easier for my skin to scar and become discolored in comparison to a person with fairer skin. I have several treatments available that cater to natural brightening and achieving an even, toned complexion.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Doing exactly what I said I was going to do and actually opening the SKINBYDI spa + studio right when I said I was going to do it is by far my proudest moment yet. I have so much more in store happening very soon with the business so I’m being very persistent with continuing to holding myself accountable and checking everything off of my SKINBYDI’s goals list.
