Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique LaGrone.
Dominique, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had the passion for hair since elementary. My Barbies had bobs. I did friends and family hair throughout middle school and high school. I pursued my cosmetology career at San Jacinto College after graduating and received my license. I participated in hairshows. In 2008, I opened Cheveux By Dominque… It was a disguised blessing.
Someone had planned to open a barbershop but the deal fell through and I inquired. The rest is history. I ran the salon for seven years in Houston Texas. I decided to relocate in 2015 to Pearland Texas which is where I remain today. My specialty is color, textured and healthy hair.
I believe textured hair can be colored and healthy. I started my career with Farouk Systems which is the inventor of Chi Flat iron in 2018. As of 2019, I am a color and texture educator. I am also hair blogger. To sum it all up, I have been doing hair my whole life. My career is going to the next level as we speak. I have something major in the works. I love spreading my talents while doing what I love. I’m anticipating what God has planned for my future. My salon motto is A Pathway To Beautiful Hair. Find Your Path.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In 2005, was when I planned to open my own salon, I took over a salon from someone I previously worked with. I painted, decorated, and even had a grand opening. The owner of the property decided they had other plans for the space. I had to relocate and I was back to square 1. It was not my time. My steps were being ordered.
Please tell us about Cheveux By Dominique.
Cheveux By Dominique is a multicultural salon. I specialize in color, healthy and textured hair. A lot of clients with textured hair feel they cannot have color. They sometimes feel if they get color the hair won’t be healthy. My salon takes pride in and is known for beautiful color while maintaining the health of textured hair. The salon also does volunteer work such as Star Of Hope, breast cancer awareness, and many other projects with local businesses and churches. I also believe customer service is key at my salon. You can be the best stylist in the world but without customer service, your business won’t succeed.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I probably would have worked for a chain salon as opposed to a private owned. I also would have taken marketing classes right after I graduated. I learned some things on my own as I went along. I would have gotten a lot further a lot sooner if I had more education on the business part.
