Today we’d like to introduce you to Elixis (Liz) Spencer.
Hi Elixis (Liz), so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve loved art all my life. When my grandmother took me to a garage sale as a kid and I used the $10 she gave me to purchase my first piece of artwork. I felt like it woke up the creative in me. From there, I was trying just about anything to keep that creativity flowing. Drawing, painting, even sculpting. I’ve been this way my whole life. But when life started life’ing I kinda strayed away from it..until COVID. Like a lot of folks, I was stressed out. My anxiety was at an all time high and I needed an outlet. So I started painting again. None of my friends knew I painted. Until one morning, everyone woke up to my artwork on twitter & IG. I created for a year before sharing my artwork. On July 27th, 2021 I sold my first piece for $100. In 2022, I hosted my first show – solo. I hosted a second one in 2023. In 2025, I took part in the Houston Art Crawl. And it all started on my living room floor.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I was scared to share my artwork. It’s such a vulnerable part of who I am. And I’m very big on protecting my peace and my art contributes to that. I also made the decision in 2023 to become a full time artist for a year. I quit my job of 7 years and dedicated myself to my craft. And while it was very transformative, I went completely broke. I poured every dollar into my craft and didn’t get the return I was expecting. But I feel like it was because I turned it into a job instead of a passion. And I began to feel depressed, unmotivated and overwhelmed. So I had to take a hiatus. It took about a year to bounce back.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an abstract artist. What I paint may not always make sense to others but it makes sense to me. And sometimes, others see something in my work that I didn’t see.
What makes me the most proud is the joy on my clients faces when they receive their piece. I love making people happy. And I love being able to use art to do it.
I don’t know if it sets me apart because I know I’m not the only one who does this but, not being afraid to try new styles of work even if it’s not my expertise. I feel like a lot of artists stick to what they know. Which is great, but there are also artists like me who have pieces that are 1of1. One piece of work is not even remotely close to another piece unless it’s a set. lol.
How do you think about happiness?
A piece that comes out exactly how i saw it in my head. The instant gratification I get is unmatched. It’s the best feeling in the world outside of holding my son.
