Meet Paloma Salazar of Hello Paloma in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paloma Salazar.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up from a middle-income family. Grew up in the southeast area, through my high school years I knew that I would always succeed and do something to fulfill my dreams.

One of my teachers and coach Israel Corona was one of my biggest motivators in high school. Because of him and other staff like Caroline Teas, I was able to travel and meet a lot of important people in our community. With the support of my family I attended HCC honors college, and from there a lot more opportunities came my way. I took them all and made sure I was involved in everything.

After receiving my associate’s degree, I had to choose a career that allowed me to help people and also make a sufficient amount of money to fulfill my other dreams. I then attended The University of St. Thomas here in Houston and received my bachelor’s degree in nursing. I worked hard and kept my grades up and received a lot of scholarships and with those, I was able to graduate with no loans and with no debt.

My dream job was to work at Texas Children’s Hospital, and that is where I’m currently working at, and I am so blessed and thankful. My traveling journey started since I was little, going to Mexico each year got me super excited. I always knew I wanted to see the world and travel. As I grew older, I traveled in high school then in college, and now I’ve taken my mother to Europe and see beyond Mexico.

My father does not like getting in planes, but I wish he would face his fears and join us on our yearly trips. Traveling brings a lot of joy and fulfills my life in a way that nothing else. Since I am not married and have no kids, I travel with friends and family. This past year, I have met some incredible women here in the Houston area that is motivational and inspiring.

I am working on my personal blog in which I plan to share my travel adventures — different things to do here in Houston and just share a bit of myself. As of right now, I hope to keep connecting with women and inspire young ladies to be independent and work hard for whatever they desire.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nope, it has not been a smooth road. School was really hard for me, in a sense that I struggled from testing anxiety. I would do well in my classes, but when it came down to the finals exit exams, I struggled. I took one of the exit exams to graduate three or four times. I was so devasted each time, thinking nursing was not for me.

My friends and family were always supportive and helped me so much. Once I graduated I also had to take a state exam, which I took twice. To me, it seemed as if this was not for me, but I continued and wanted this so much, that now I know why things played out the way they did.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hello Paloma story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Hispanic young woman that started from maybe nothing, and I am now successful in what I do. I work for one of the best hospitals in the world, and I am doing something I love. When I’m not at work, I am exploring my city or traveling the world because its what makes me happy.
