Meet Holli Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holli Schultz.

Holli, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in New Orleans. At a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist, and dreamed of being a celebrity hairstylist. At the age of 9, I asked for a birthday party at a hair salon. This was an unusual request for a birthday party, especially in the ’90s, but my mom somehow made it happen for me! In high school, I was the go-to hair and make up girl for all dances in my group of friends. As my senior year of high school approached, I decided I wanted to explore college before choosing to go to beauty school. My fall semester of my freshman year at LSU, August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit. My home, my families homes, my friend’s homes, were all under water and unlivable. This pushed my oldest sister and her family to relocate to Houston. I was lost and unsure of what I wanted and where I wanted to go in life during my first two years of college. I decided maybe a complete change of scenery would help, so I signed up for community college and moved to Houston. After one year in school, I decided to take the plunge and sign up for cosmetology school. I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist, so there was no reason to put it off any longer. The rest is history really. I decided from that point I was going to put 150% into my career and be the best stylist I could be. I started my career at a world-renowned salon, Toni and Guy in the Houston Galleria. From there I went onto another apprenticeship in a River Oaks salon and worked in a couple of other salons in the Montrose area throughout the years. Nine years later here I am, a seasoned, self-employed stylist working in the heart of the Houston Heights.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a hairstylist. I love to create effortless-looking styles using both hair color and hair cutting techniques. The most important part of my work is to have the client leave exuding confidence and wearing a smile. In order to achieve this, it is imperative that I consult with my client before the services begin. I have to be honest and be sure they are aware of what will be realistic and achievable with their wants and needs. My motto with every client is to under promise and over deliver! My job entails much more than creating awesome hair; It requires trust, consistency, friendship, an open mind, an open heart, patience, and so much more. My hope is that my clients leave my chair feeling they can conquer the world! I want them to not only leave feeling beautiful on the outside but on the inside as well and looking forward to their next appointment with me!

The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
If you truly have a passion and drive for your artwork, you have to have patience and work extra hard, in the beginning especially, to make ends meet. The financial struggle won’t be forever as long as you keep your focus and passion on your artwork. There was a period of 4-5 years that I had to work two jobs. Being a hairstylist alone was not paying the bills. I waited tables and worked full time in the salon until I built a strong clientele. Once I got to a point that my clientele was consistent, I was able to quit waiting tables and live comfortably solely working as a hairstylist. I never gave up my dream, though it took several years, I achieved my goal and have a comfortable lifestyle as hairstylist.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?

Holli is a dream! She is creative, fun, and professional. She has been doing my hair for around four years. I trust her implicitly! She is a master colorist, hands down. Check her out you won’t be sorry!
