Meet Jack Babin of Moonmoon Alchemist in East Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Babin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jack. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been an artist since I was young. My parents were very supportive and enrolled me in after-school art classes at the University of Houston in Clearlake. In my teens, I stopped painting and pursued Acting, and Writing. It wasn’t until my mid-thirties did I rediscover my true passion. Using art as therapy in order to heal from a series of personal traumas, I realized the emptiness I felt inside wasn’t because of anyone, but had everything to do with myself. I was not happy, because I was just living and not creating.

In 2017, a roommate at the time had suggested that I try and sell my work, but I was unresponsive, thinking, no one would buy it, but the universe had other plans for me. So, long story short, I took the advice of my roommate. I quit my toxic job and cashed in my 401K to buy art supplies. I knew it was risky, but this was the reset, I was looking for. My debut was the Eado Art Crawl in November of 2017, right after Hurricane Harvey. I did not sell a single piece which was humbling, but it did not stop me, it only made me want it more.

I repurposed my warehouse apartment into a studio and began selling art out of it with minimal success. Times were tough, and if it wasn’t for the help and support of friends, I do not believe, I would’ve sustained. It wasn’t until I met Promoter Shannon Dubree of The Dobo and started attending the Art Market La Sopa did I receive the exposure, I was looking for. This only propelled me into attending other Art Markets under the umbrella of The Dobo as well as Eliments promoted by Javier Hyplektro. By the end of 2018, I have sold 87 pieces of original art. I am truly grateful.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been challenging, but it’s all about the journey and not the finish line.

Please tell us about Moonmoon Alchemist.
The company is called Moonmoon Alchemist and I sell art.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my fondest memories is in high school where I had the opportunity to be a part of the filming of Rushmore directed by Wes Anderson, and starring Bill Murray. It was an amazing moment to see how a movie is made. It gave me the chance to meet one of my all-time favorite actors, and since then, one of my favorite directors to this day. Meeting Anderson was truly an inspiration being he is from Houston. It showed me anything is possible. Though I did not make the final cut in the movie, the memory and moment are all I need.
