Today we’d like to introduce you to Janice Contreras.
Janice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I knew that I wanted to travel and take photos at a young age. So, for college, I decided to attend The Art Institute of Houston, where I graduated with my photography degree in 2016. During my time there, I also worked as a Peer Mentor. I was sort of a guidance counselor for the new students, while also planning all of the events on campus along with a team of other mentors. My time at The Art Institute really kick-started my photography journey because I had the chance to work with and learn from all types of artists/designers whom I still work with today. This is also how I began hosting and curating art shows. As peer mentors, we hosted quarterly art expos for the students to showcase and sell their work. I believe that college is not only about what you learn but, who you know. I made the best of my time there.
Has it been a smooth road?
At first for artists, it is hard to find constant work and commissions. You want to continue creating but, you need to be able to make a living out of it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jan Contreras Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I have a portrait photography business. I like to take photos of people. I like to tell/show a story with my portraits. The work I am most known for and proud of is my Intimate portraits of women. What sets my boudoir style apart from other photography is that my work is so diverse. I do not have a set look to my photos. I love the challenge of making all types of women look and feel their best. I love changing it up, from dark and moody images too bright and playful. It all tells a story.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Technology is advancing so rapidly. It seems that there are updates and advances every day. Cameras are becoming more accessible. I would like to see more people telling stories. Better stories, better quality.
