Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Bush.
Joseph, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I remember when I was 17, I would sew clothes for myself. I would wear these clothes to different parties and outings and get so many compliments. Growing up, I couldn’t afford fine apparel or high fashion. Hearing all the good feedback inspired me to pursue a career in fashion. Although looking back some of those outfits were so awful lol. My style has evolved since then. I moved to Texas to study fashion design at HCC. Then I began to land different retail jobs and internships. I have a lot of experience in visual styling with a few different companies, including Neiman Marcus, which is where I style full time now. It’s so funny I remember living in the projects never even thinking I would step into a store like Neimans. Throughout this time, I was able to meet a friend and mentor Marzi Fat. Marzi is an established stylist here in Houston. She took me under her wing to assist her with a few different projects, and she has taught me a lot about the fashion styling business. With all of my experience in visual styling and assistant styling, I felt it was time for me to put my name on something. That’s when I launched Viewsfromjoe.com
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. The funniest assumption that people make about my job is that I make a lot of money. They see all the designer merchandise I work with and assume it’s all about glitz and glam. There have been rough times, but nothing ever hard enough to make me give up. I am truly passionate about transforming people through fashion. It takes years of assisting and interning before you even land major jobs. It takes years of building PR contacts and landing stylist programs with boutiques and different retail stores. It’s really just about patience, and knowing your time will come.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Viewsfromjoe story. Tell us more about the business.
So Viewsfromjoe is basically a styling service/portfolio. It’s an opportunity for me to give my audience and clients a view of my styling and taste level. It’s a website designed to showcase my talent and to also help people with their fashion struggles. There are different types of stylists. You can be a personal stylist or fashion stylist. A personal stylist is someone who shops for everyday people for their everyday lives. It’s more intimate, and you dig deep into the client’s everyday wardrobe. Fashion stylist, who is what I am is basically a stylist who works with people a lot in front of the camera. This is someone who can be working on a photo shoot with a client or styling for big events, tv shows, or movies. Most of their work is editorial. I’m just proud that I stopped procrastinating and actually designed my website. I think sometimes we all fear that it’s not perfect enough, but it’s like we all have to start somewhere you know. I think what sets me apart is that I’m truly me. There’s a million other stylist out there that are doing their thing, but I just know that there’s something so special about me deep down inside and that’s what keeps me going. I know God called me to do this. I’m just getting started I have a responsibility, and that is to inspire the youth and people who are from the hood like me who can’t see a way out. I want to encourage people that you can achieve anything if you simply believe. I want my name to be everywhere and styling a- list celebrities and being a high profile stylist. My time will come, but for now, I hope that my fans continue to follow my journey.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I remember when I lived back home in New Orleans, I would feel not embraced as a fashion artist. There’s little to no opportunity for people who are pursuing fashion careers in the city. I remember not getting opportunities like the ones that I have today. I wanted to be a visual stylist so bad back home, and I got so many doors closed in my face. I guess you can call that bad luck. I just felt like nothing was working for me home so it was time to move and my life did a 360. Look at me now. I have assistant styling credits in Local Houston Magazine, and I style full time for one of the biggest luxury retailers. God is good.
