Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Mouton.
J. Mouton (www.jmoutonjewels.com), the artisan jewelry gift shop, caters to you sharing a style that reflects many tastes that all spell pretty. Specializing in ready-to-wear or made-to-order jewelry and accessories, everything always fits.
So, what’s the story behind the brand?
As the founder and lead designer of the brand, private pop up treasure shop turned online gift store, I always had an interest in retailing and working with people. My career in retailing started while in college. I worked for a leading retailer in over 15 different departments, the longest in ladies accessories to provide consulting, styling, and merchandising. Then, I was recruited by brands to assist with product launches along with district and training management for one of the top 50 companies. After being impacted by a number of derailments, a robbery, store closing, getting sick after participating as a vendor at an outdoor festival, I decided to pursue additional interests in graduate school and became a university professor and college instructor teaching retail and business courses. To my surprise, the retail bug would hit again after a canceled guest speaker for a business course project forced me to become creative. I recalled a jewelry gift I made for a friend, the love of jewelry making, and quickly created a simple plan and a website to become the guest of the day. As I introduced myself to the students, I became part of the lesson and expressed business is not always business as usual, nor is a career.
Today, as a professor for ten years, a designer, and retailer, I celebrate the richness of diversity, especially with style. Known for artisan jewelry collections, the Love, Just Drinks, Power Talks, Lifestyle, and the I Love Shoes Collections, my medley of designs are inspired by real-life and the belief that everyone has a personal style and a story.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been a number of challenges. Businesses and careers are not always created by walking a straight path. I often compare them both to the weather. We look at the forecast to detect rain, hurricane or a storm and we do our best to prepare. We know to anticipate a storm landing. We just don’t know the exact spot it will land. Many businesses, like mine, have experienced the impact of the pandemic, which has driven a change in business models or different, often creative ways to attract or retain clients. J. Mouton transitioned from an artisan jewelry party pop-up retailer to an online retailer to weather the storm.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
J. Mouton (www.jmoutonjewels.com), the artisan jewelry brand and treasure gift shop offers an array of ready-to-wear or made-to-order jewelry. Our lightweight accessories are typically made with silver, copper, crystal beading, and genuine leather or suede combinations. Although we’ve accomplished plenty, we are proud of our original community outreach program, the Hoops for Hoops Campaign that celebrates big or small milestones with jewelry, you guessed it, hoops. We’re also expanding by adding a limited edition work-from-home fashionable t-shirt product line to express quirky wording, like “Dress Code Optional” or “I am busy making sense.” J. Mouton establishes itself as an all-inclusive style brand and contemporary retailer for fun finds and good buys.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been fortunate to have a faith-based upbringing and support from caring family members, friends, and teachers. This has been a journey with a series of moments that have shaped me as a person and an artist. I do think that opportunity, faith, fate, effort, and preparation can align.
