Meet Karen Escobedo of Raina La Rue in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Escobedo.

Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have a girls and ladies clothing label named after my oldest daughter (Raina). I am also currently working on up-cycling new and used army and navy jackets and tents. The proceeds from these particular designs will go towards the Wounded Warrior Project.

I attended FIT in NY a while ago and worked in Sales and Marketing for a number of cosmetic companies including (Aveda, Estée Lauder, Glo Minerals, Jane Iredale and AGI Dermatics).

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all! I’m trying to get my name out there on the luxury boutique scene in Houston but it’s been an uphill battle (trying to book trunk shows). Most of the time – I don’t get a call back. I visit in person, email, call – everyone is just so busy! You really have to get creative with your approach in order to get your target’s attention. Recently, I approached a Houston Influencer (for an Instagram post) who informed me that she did not put on a dress for a designer for less than 3-4 k. Per day. (It’s expensive to be out of the loop (network) – no pun intended)

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Raina La Rue – what should we know?
We specialize in classic American designs using vintage prints. All of our apparel is made in small batches so that your child is not matching at the school program. My father was a WWII Veteran…The only reason so many of us Americans are able to chase our dreams is because of our service members! I am passionate about helping our soldiers and their families.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I don’t give up and I am laser beamed focused on one thing at a time!
