Meet Kem Coan of Kem Coan Photography in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kem Coan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kem. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a native Houstonian, married to my college sweetheart and have two amazing children ages 29 and 26 and a wonderful daughter-in-law. My M-F routine consists of working full-time as a Personal Injury Claims Manager handling offshore injures for a marine transportation company based in Houston, TX. In an effort to balance the stress of my day job, which includes being on call 24/7, three years ago I decided to invest in a professional level DSLR camera and immerse myself in every genre of photography, including portraits, events, weddings, urban, wildlife, macro and astro photography. Some say, you should pick one type of photography, but I still love them all! After taking a plethora of night/weekend photography class and shadowing several Houston based photographers, my photography skills started being requested in and around the Houston area. The most demanding (in a good way) project that I am currently engaged in, is helping my personal dog trainer, Stephanie Bennett, with the upstart of her new dog training enrichment center which is located in the Heights, called Believe in DOG Training. When it is completed, it is going to be awesome!!! Attending Stephanie’s puppy training classes and capturing images of her clients and their canines as they are learning new training skills, and then displaying those images for her on various forms of social media, has been very rewarding. Regardless of the different genres of photography I explore, I keep coming back to the images of humans and canines which gives me the ability to “feel” their souls. This is definitely one of the most rewarding aspects about photography for me. And now, I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most challenging thing about photography, has been the learning curve of the editing process. After taking several classes to help me master the camera settings and composition, I then pushed myself to mastering Lightroom, Photoshop and other editing software programs. Another huge struggle was making myself get out of my comfort zone when photographing people. Shooting portraits and weddings still scares me to death no matter how many times I do them!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kem Coan Photography – what should we know?
My photography business is very simple and basic. I will pretty much shoot any venue or activity that someone asks me to do. Why not? I will never learn if I don’t at least give it a try.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I prefer shooting in natural lighting during the golden hours, early morning or evening, when the lighting is at its best. Being able to capture the connection people have with each other and/or their canines with my camera is my greatest reward. It’s not the photo itself but the reason it’s taken… capturing moments in life that turn into personal and meaningful memories treasured for a lifetime.
