Today we’d like to introduce you to Kentrel Code.
Kentrel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Set Sail Apparel after losing out on a couple of job opportunities – one of those being discharged from the Navy. So I decided to create my own opportunity and build a clothing line that reflected my past in the Navy, as well as my journey to success. I always had a style that was simple but flashy growing up. So I fused my journey, along with my partner’s journey, and combined our style together to create art. The rest is history. I started with the idea but together we’ve worked through obstacles, stayed consistent and had patience on our course.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. We’ve faced a lot of problems including inventory management and product placement. Those struggles brought us closer together as we’re learning to creatively problem solve and involve the right people on our team.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Set Sail Apparel – what should we know?
Set Sail Apparel is motivational quality wear with a yachtsman’s feel. As the founder, my role is to oversee operations in the company. I currently work with two partners — Chloe who is over marketing and Marquis, who’s in charge of designs. As a team, we work together as one to make the company “set sail” towards success.
We are all very proud of what we’re building right now. Our proudest moment this year was hosting our first showcase at the Arka Art Studio where we showcased our brand new collection — the Yacht Racing Club — and brought out some of the best underground talents in Houston.
Since we’re In the fashion industry, we have to be forward-thinking and strategic. What separates us from most is that we amplify the talent within our network and share stories. Our brand is all about people turning temporary setbacks into permanent successes.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest supporters have been my family and the community of supporters in Houston who stand behind what we’re creating and rock with the message. Without them, the brand wouldn’t be what it is today. I also have a great team behind me, as mentioned previously, who assist me with the brand marketing (Chloe) and design creation (Marquis).
