Today we’d like to introduce you to King Jawz.
King, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My music career started off in high school. I would freestyle about everyone at lunch and it caught a lot of attention. At the time, I was interested in basketball though. Music was just fun. Went to Hampton to play ball and end up being the freestyle king on campus. Was offered my first deal there.
Looked a lot like Luda so they tried to bring me in as a protege. Wasn’t happening. Made it to the semifinals of Making the Band. Gave me a little buzz. Came back to Houston and got with former Young Money member ShortDawg. We were supposed to move to ATL and work on a deal together but of course it didn’t work out that way. Lived there for a few years. Met a lot of people. Bryan Micheal Cox is basically family and I wanted to get on Black Baby Records but ended up moving back home because my mother was sick. Linked up with Picasso, CEO of Basik Art and became a painter/artist and created Basik Music.
In the meantime, so much was happening to my family, mother was getting sick from the surgeries she had in result of a deadly wreck. God kept her here 11 more years after that day. She died on the stretcher and I prayed for two hours straight and he brought her back. The woman was my hero and the strongest person I know. I left music alone when she died. I thought it was over. Due to a few friends, my forever, and my son. I’ve grown the love for it again. Grown the love for fashion again as well. Luckily I still have a nice group of supporters that’s getting bigger by the day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Two dropped deals. Mother passing. Arrested and labeled a fugitive in another county. Had to take care of my entire household at the age of 15. Moved to Atlanta on a dream. Lived in a hotel for three months with my mother and sister. Health went all the way down when mother passed. I almost left with her. Cheated out of Making the Band. Few cases made me miss out on two major deals. Signed a deal that flopped. Lied to a million times.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Basik Art and Basik Music are the opposite of the base word. From custom paint to painted walls and murals, it’s nothing like you’ve seen. My music is just the music version of the fashion. We’ve put ALL of Houston’s major artists in our clothes. My style of music isn’t the basic Houston/southern rapper. Very lyrical and aggressive. It’s nothing like me. I can describe a room full of people off the head. It’s never been a label with fashion and music that went major. Trying to be the first.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Don’t know about luck. I do know about faith. I have a lot of it. That has helped me I know for sure. Bad luck usually isn’t bad luck, it’s bad decision making. So I don’t think neither have played a big role.
