Meet Kristen Felan of Felan Photography in Greater Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Felan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always enjoyed taking pictures, whether it was of other people, my dogs, or myself. It was a way to capture memories and make time standstill. In 2013, my parents presented me with my first DSLR camera. From that moment, I have indulged so much time, energy, and passion into photography. I am self-taught; YouTube and Pinterest have become my best friends. In 2013, I started taking photos of friends and simply learning the ins and outs of my camera. I taught myself how to capture blurred backgrounds and sharp images with every session. Fast forward to 2017, when I met my fiancé. I was not into photography as much as I had hoped. For Christmas that year, he gifted me the Nikon D7100 with so much encouragement to dive deeper into my passion. Since then, my photography has flourished. I made a promise to myself to give photography everything I had. I promised myself to say YES to any and every photo session inquiry. If I didn’t know how to shoot in the way a client was asking, I worked until I could. I have booked sessions with so many people from so many different backgrounds. I have met so many amazing people along this journey and I am thankful for every client that gave me the opportunity to capture their memories.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Photography is not as simple as picking up a camera and pushing a button. Angles are the lifeline. Sharp imagery is important and with one minor shake, it could be blurry. I am still learning how to get the look I am going for and learning different techniques to use. It has been said that we are our worst critic and that holds very true. I still get so nervous before every session. I want to give people the best photos I possibly can. This road has been nothing short of challenging but challenges are important for growth.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Felan Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Felan being my last name and photography being my passion. I have no specific specialty. I specialize in all types of photography – maternity, family, portraits, newborns, ETC. My next goal is to branch out of my comfort zone and capture love at the altar, with shooting weddings. I make sure to be flexible and patient with clients. I adore children, but I know that sometimes it could be difficult trying to get them to sit still. I think that is what I’m most known for. I’m so proud of the growth of my business and so excited to see how far we can go.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe in fate, not luck. “No, I’m not lucky… I’m blessed, YES) – Nicki Minaj. I found my passion and I’ve worked hard to make it successful.
