Meet Lucia Aguirre of Akahuali in Jersey Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia Aguirre.

Lucia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I go by my middle name, Lia. I was born and raised in Acapulco, MX. I have lived in Houston for about three years. After completing my bachelor’s degree in psychology in Mexico, I got married to Victor. We’ve held a long distance relationship for more than six years prior to getting married. He was raised in Atlanta and moved to Houston for work. Love and marriage is the reason why I moved here.

A few months after moving to Houston, I started thinking about creating a small business. After some brainstorming akahuali was born. I wanted to share, support and promote the beautiful and amazing work of Mexican artisans and bring color, art, tradition, and modernity to the women’s wardrobe.

Akahuali (akauali) is the náhuatl name of a Mexican flower best known as cosmos. When I was thinking of a name I thought about the Mexican embroidery and realized flowers are a common pattern used. I began to researched names of Mexican flowers and I found akauali. I immediately thought, “I think I found the name”! I just add an “h” to the name and this is how I came up with the name of “Akahuali”.

I started selling through IG and then decided to create a website. I didn’t have the money to hire a professional, so I decided to do it myself. Through the help of YouTube, I was able to get my website up and running within few weeks. Yay!

Has it been a smooth road?
Well, I can’t say it’s been smooth, but definitely my husband has made my road easier. He has helped me a lot in this journey. I feel very thankful with him. My struggles mostly having been marketing, getting more people to know my brand.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Akahuali provides handmade Mexican clothing fused with today’s fashion. The main goal is to support and share the beautiful work of Mexican artisans, but also to keep the traditions of textiles art alive. Akahuali is a colorful brand. Is for people looking to add a little bit more color, art, tradition, and modernity to their wardrobe.

One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to help artisans by buying their crafts and showcasing their amazing talent with the rest of the world. I value the work, time and passion they put into each piece of clothing and accessory, so it’s always important for me to conduct a fair and respectful trade.
