Meet Luis Lopez of Lopez Advisors in Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Lopez.

Luis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from Lamar University with my Masters in Accounting, I ventured into the world of public accounting as an auditor for Deloitte & Touche. Although I found success auditing multimillion-dollar publicly traded companies, I quickly realized – I hated it. However, it took one other accounting role at a publicly-traded company to realize that I did not want to spend the rest of my life talking to an excel spreadsheet all day.

Growing up, I helped my parents with administrative work and often experienced a lack of willingness to teach and help us understand how these processes worked. I witnessed many families just like mine be taken advantage of because of a lack of knowledge towards their tax return or insurance policy. I believe that an insurance and tax professional should serve as an advisor and invest the necessary time to thoroughly educate their client.

I left the accounting industry for a more interactive and people-centric purpose. I wanted to combine my professional expertise with my passion for serving others and become a game-changer in the tax and insurance industry. Upon acquiring a Farmers Insurance Agency, we began offering personal and business Tax preparation services.

Our agency’s foundation is built from our passion to serve, educate and improve the lives of our clients. To date we have earned multiple awards for our service and growth within our industry. With a strong foundation and a team of fully licensed professionals our vision is to become the largest insurance and tax preparation providers in Texas.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Entrepreneurship is never smooth. The sooner you accept this fact, the faster you will grow.

I had zero experience in sales and insurance so the learning curve was a major struggle for the first couple of months. I acquired an agency and therefore had to learn overnight in order to properly serve our clients. Staffing is another area that I struggled with. I used to think that I was great at identifying and developing talent. I quickly learned that I was okay at it and not great. Our team has come a long way and I am proud that we have built a solid foundation to continue building upon.

With growth come challenges. I have been blessed with solid growth over the years. However, those blessings have always come attached to challenges. The more you grow the more everyone (clients, staff, vendors, etc.) demands your time. Finding the right balance and effectively managing my time has been a struggle within itself.

I grew up struggling and have always embraced difficult times. No matter what the problem is, there is always a solution.

What were you like growing up?
I started working at a blueberry orchard with my brothers at a very young age. Work ethic and keeping busy has always been a part of who I am. Growing up poor with seven siblings also helped me learn to save and manage money early on. Outside of work, I was pretty easy going, always laughing and making others laugh. As far as interest, I developed a love for boxing when I began attending the local boxing gym with one of my older brothers. It is still my favorite sport. Reading was also a major interest of mine. Diving into a book allowed me to get away for a couple of hours and dream. As I grew, community engagement became a major point of interest and that is where my passion to serve others developed.
