Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Gates.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Maurice. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been naturally funny. Making others laugh and smile made me feel good inside. Growing up I would always watch Def Comedy Jam, BET Comic View, and classic movie comedies like Friday. I wished to one day be in a film or on the stage like many of the great comedians/actors that I grew up watching. I’ve always made funny videos for my Facebook and Instagram friends to get a good laugh but I never took it seriously. It wasn’t until one of my Gym videos went semi viral of me showing people how to do the Dougie (D-town Boogie) that I realized if I took this serious I could actually create something special. I started cranking out videos daily. The content was mainly fitness and Houston based. My Biggest video that got me on the map was my CRIPFIT skit where I showed people how to Crip walk better using the weight room. This garnered the attention of many celebrities(too many to name lol) and increased my following exponentially. All of these vids up to this point were filmed and edited on my Android phone. I realized if I wanted to get to the next level, I would need to invest in myself. So I bought a legit camera and editing software. Just an FYI, I write, produce, film, and edit all of my content. My content quality and consistency has increased tenfold and here I am talking to Voyage Houston!!!!
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth. Having a 9-5 job really limits the amount you can put out content. You know I have a wife and two kids so it’s kind of hard to get the kids ready, go to work (sometimes long hours), get home in this Houston traffic, take care of the kids, THEN try to film/edit skits by myself. Luckily my wife helps me out by taking more of the load with the kids which allows me to get a lot more done. Also, it’s very frustrating trying to film with no help and then when you do have help they may not be as film savvy as you are. I have a very Creative, weird mind, so it’s hard for people to truly grasp what I am trying to capture when filming. It’s hard to finding like-minded people like yourself to create good quality content. I have a few friends like Dedrick Taylor, Mark Reed (Drip Productions), Mike Spohn (Adultaverage), Eric Bates (39cents), and Trae Tha Truth who have helped me in more ways than they know.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My brand Kreative Comedy (IG @Reesetopher_) is a one stop shop for funny and creative video content. I write, film, and edit all of my content and also offer those services to others who want that Kreative twist. I’m proud of the people my content reaches. There are people all over the world who watch my content and get a laugh daily. My content is creative and most importantly original! I’m not trying to be any other comedian or content creator, I’m just being the silly kid I’ve always been.
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
I would have taken it seriously earlier. I probably didn’t think I could get this far so I never attempted to reach outside of my local Facebook and IG following. I would be much further along but hey, I have a beautiful wife, two great kids and a community of supporters who I greatly appreciate!!!
