Meet Michelle Cofield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Cofield.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started this journey four and a half years ago. My mother passed away in 2012. Shortly after that, I asked God for my purpose, and that’s when I begin practicing makeup. I wasn’t good at first. I will practice on my daughter all the time. Mostly I was into the eyeshadows and eyebrows, and that’s how I charged. It maybe was $25 here and there. Shortly after that, I began watching some YouTube videos and reading books from Kevin Aucoin to Bobbi Brown. I knew I just didn’t want to be a makeup artist, but I wanted to be licensed because most makeup artists do not have to have a license but a certificate. I work for a federal government contractor so I know school would be very hard. I decide to go anyway to Ogle School in Stafford with high hopes. Long story short I got in. I would be up for three days at a time working from 6 pm to 6 am and going to school 8a to 4 pm. I would shower in motel rooms before going to school, but I finished school, became a licensed esthetician and began working at a salon. I always knew I wanted to work for myself in which that’s what I ultimately did. I work for TFPs which is trade for photos in which I met my first Felix Valeri whom which I’m still with today. I began building my portfolio of just Beauty shots, and then later I start going for the more editorial stuff. I begin adding to my Team with another Photographer named Ken Robinson and a boutique owner Jeanette Hill but has Been blessed to work with Some Awesome Local Photographers such as Stevie Reid, Touche’ Studios, Jared Gilmore, Irina Petrova, D Hinez, Jonathan Garrett and Dontae Kinney. I have been Published from Year 1 and is now Going on five years and still is Hungry for More!

Please tell us about your art.
I love creating. A few Years Ago an Artist from Indianapolis named Kenneth Hordge drew a picture of me with his fingers. It was so dope. It made me want to create. I think that everyone should have a piece of art of themselves. It would be such a great conversation piece whenever someone visited their home or I seen them in a magazine. I create anything from using mud, paint, rhinestones, pearls, latex, glitter, stencils, etc… Anything I possibly could get my hands on. I’m never close-minded to anything. When people see my work, I want them to be inspired to know they can do the same. That it doesn’t mean that you’re weird, but you just see everything as beautiful. Just create. You never know what masterpiece you’ll make or whom you’ll touch making it.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The Biggest Challenge of Artist today is sometimes lack of support from their Community or Peers. Also, some may think they shouldn’t push to do makeup artistry because it is sooooo many of muas or Beauty Gurus but the Beauty Industry is growing, and everyone has their own uniqueness.
