Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Bingham.
Hi Mimi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I can remember, supporting and nurturing others has always come naturally to me. I was the person friends and family would call to be by their side for not only trying times in life but their births as well. It wasn’t until I experienced my own traumatic birth and postpartum experience that I decided to officially get into birth work. I never want a mother to feel alone or fearful of giving birth. I initially started my journey as a Doula and very quickly, I became a Student Midwife. I am now in the final stage of becoming a licensed Midwife.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The toughest part about the work that I do is not being able to help everyone who seeks my services. I am only one person but I try my best to make as much of an impact as possible. It helps that I have built a wonderful village of other birth workers to whom I can refer people.
As you know, we’re big fans of Touched by Mimi Birth Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Touched by Mimi Birth Services offers birth and postpartum Doula services, placenta encapsulation, placenta prints and salves as well as delicious lactation cookies. I also sell branded t-shirts on my website as a fundraiser for financially challenged families who otherwise would not be able to afford Doula services. I take great pride in truly being a part of my client’s journey. From the day my clients hire me, I am available to them 24/7. I always strive to provide as much information and support to assist my client in attaining the experience they desire. It’s also important that I do so without judgment or bias to what their wishes may be. I am truly there to support them and their partner every step of the way. I would say that I am known for being a calm presence yet a fearless protector. The name of my practice came from everyone telling me that I have a healing and very comforting touch. I believe what separates me from others is being grounded, spiritually. I am also a true empath. When I am on these journeys with my clients, I am one with them. Almost all, if not all, of my clients, maintain a relationship with me beyond their birth. I love to stay in touch and I have a lot of everlasting relationships from the work that I do. I am most proud of my ability to impact so many people and leave a positive impression for them to spread to others.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to become a licensed homebirth Midwife and eventually open my own Birth Center. I wish to provide a safe space for families to experience the birth they desire. I look forward to increasing my ability to have a direct impact on maternal and infant health. I desire to make a change in the maternal morbidity/mortality rates amongst Black women. Most pregnancy and postpartum deaths are preventable. I want to make sure that mothers are being heard and not dismissed with their concerns. Birth is a natural physiological occurrence that sometimes needs medical intervention – not the other way around. I am passionate about changing the way pregnancy and birth are both handled and viewed today.
