Meet Mina Iskander of Soaring Kidz in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Iskander.

Mina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first moved to Houston in 2007 to begin my first job as a pediatric physical therapist. I noticed when I first moved here, that there were no programs that offered sports and recreational programs for kids and teens with special needs year round, so that’s how the idea of starting Soaring Kidz came about and in the fall of 2008, we started with one T-Ball program in the Fall and the organization has continued to grow. We now offer 6 sports programs throughout the year to include: Soccer, taekwondo, basketball, T-ball, Gymnastics, and flag football.
We also offer several recreational activities and programs throughout the year such as: Art for All, Golf a d Dancing. We also provide an opportunity for our kids and their families to attend several live sporting events throughout the year free of charge. We have been to Astros, Rockets, Dynamo, and Skeeters games.

Has it been a smooth road?
We have definitely had our share of obstacles along the way. One of the things we found to be a challenge was finding facilities throughout the greater Houston area to conduct our programs. Another big challenge we fought along the way was finding enough volunteers to assist in running the programs, but the smiles we have seen throughout our time with the kids make it all worth it. As I always tell our sponsors and volunteers, “Nothing successful is accomplished without passion and hard work. ”

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Soaring Kidz – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We offer year-round sports and recreational programs for kids and teens with special needs in the Greater Houston community. We are different from other adaptive programs in the area as our programs run year round and we offer different sports programs throughout the year as it gives the participants an opportunity to experience all the sports. We pair each child/teen with a volunteer that guides and leads them throughout the practice. Our programs are designed by physical and occupational and speech therapists. Our coaches are former players, coaches and special needs instructors.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how our city bonds together as one team in times of needs.

Pricing:

  • We charge a flat fee of $50 for the entire 6-week program. That fee covers the cost of the facility, equipment and uniforms as well as end of season party.

We love Soaring Kidz! Because of this amazing organization our Tre’ has been able to partake in several different sports that we always wanted him to be a part of, but was not able to because of the fact that he is differently abled. Everyone is very kind, understanding, and very patient! We are forever grateful for them! We can’t thank Soaring Kidz enough!
