Meet Mona Jackson of Good Ground Business

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Jackson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mona. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have literally been an entrepreneur since the age of seven (Literally). Being from Colorado I loved the outdoors, this was the perfect setting for my first business venture. I shoveled snow for money with my sister she was always my partner in crime. I would go door to door on big snow days and convince my neighbors to pay me. In the summer I would collect metal and glass scraps. I would take what many considered trash to my local grocery store, the clerk would weight the scraps and pay me on the spot! I knew at a young age, I wanted to be financially independent.

Fast forward to finishing college, I have worked for Fortune 500 companies and with CEO’s of large and small companies. I have worked with nonprofit companies as well. I have also been in many different types of industries and personally started several businesses. Many of my first businesses failed due to me giving up with times go tough or not starting off on a good foundation.

I am currently the owner of a childcare center Kids of Valor Academy and cleaning company Southern Belle Cleaning. I am also the CEO of a small investment firm, and I am in a church leadership position.

I started Good Ground because I have a passion for women entrepreneurs. I have helped many take the vision God has given them to become a reality.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Transitioning from an employee to an entrepreneur was very difficult. I found myself wanting to give up several times. For example my preschool grew and we were close to capacity and needing to start a waiting list. At the same time, I was offered a CEO position with a small investment firm. I hired a Director for the preschool and within three months of me hiring her we lost 70 percent of our enrollment. Yes you heard that right 70% enrollment decrease. I felt defeated and I wanted to close the door. Instead, I dug in spoke to the staff and parents that were left. I prayed and came up with a strategy in two months we has increased our enrollment and this time we actually have a waiting list for a few of our classes.

Good Ground Business – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets Good Ground apart is we are focused on women entrepreneurs. We help mentor and help develop their talents. I consider myself the fairy godmother of business. I help turn your dream into a reality. What is also unique is we believe God is the CEO of your business. Failure is not an option or in our vocabulary. We also hold business seminars for entrepreneurs that have a business idea but do not know where to start. My favorite quote is “Build your own dreams, or someone will hire you to build theirs.”-Farrah Gray. Many people think you need a ton of money to start a business. That is not true, I am living proof of that. I often tell my clients, I can work with any budget…Let’s do this!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as leaving a legacy for my children and grandchildren. My mother was nearly killed by my father a victim of domestic violence. Many of the women cannot leave because they do not have the financial resources to leave. My goal with Good Ground and Kids of Valor is to ensure women are business savvy and that I donate to organizations that help women get out of these violent situations. I also love that I can hire these women empower them and see them soar. Success is ensuring no woman has to suffer and we are empowered to be all that God has called us to be.
