Meet Nadia, Lesli, Adela, Berna and Anahi Rodriguez of Las Fenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadia, Lesli, Adela, Berna and Anahi Rodriguez.

Nadia, Lesli, Adela, Berna and Anahi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We are five sisters from Houston, TX! We started singing and dancing over 10 years ago, and then we started playing our own instruments. The first time we performed was for dad’s birthday. It was going to be his birthday present from us. Something different than the usual shirt, pants and socks. Lol. He has always had a passion for music so we knew it would be the perfect gift for him. We prepared a couple of songs and performed with mariachi at his birthday party. We were terrible. We sang and danced terribly, but we really enjoyed it.

We then started taking singing and dancing classes and started performing at small radio events and festivals. We weren’t the best, but people really liked us since we were so small and “cute”. We then had someone give dad the idea that Berna, who was the youngest at the moment, learn to play the accordion. That it would be something new since back then there weren’t many female musicians. Since she was going to learn and instruments, we all decided to learn as well. Nadia on the bass, Lesli on the bajo quinto (which is like a guitar but with 10 strings), Adela on the drums, Berna on the accordion and Anahi on the percussions. What was just a hobby slowly became the rest of our lives and after so many years, and so much support, it became our career.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The fact that we get to do music and share our “business” within ourselves, sisters and parents, has made it pretty smooth. But we did have many people tell our dad that we would not be able to make it without a record label, and with us being “girls/woman”. Many people believe, even up to this date, that we would grow up to “fall in love” or get married and walk away from the band. But we love what we do, and we’ve worked very hard to get where we are.

We know better than to just throw it all away. Because everything we have achieved is due to our parents love and support and many hours of dedication and sacrifices made along the way.

Please tell us about Las Fenix.
We have recently started writing our own songs and have made our way through a male-dominated industry. We are known for our energy on stage and the way we interact with fans. Plus, it’s not very easy to find a band of all women, and all sisters! 🙂

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We would have started writing our own songs a long time ago. People love covers, and so do we, but there’s nothing like being known for your own music. We have now started to write, but we still have much more learning to do.
