Today we’d like to introduce you to Trena Nelson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Trena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was introduced to cosmetology at an early age. My mother and grandmother had a salon years ago. My sister and I were “shampoo girls”. I remember practicing on my mother’s mannequins. I would cut their hair and style it so much my mom would just give the mannequin to me, lol. My mom tried to persuade me into going to cosmetology school while I was in high school, but I decided to go to the university instead. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and went into the workforce immediately. My first job after college, I was making $10 per hour. How crazy is that! Here, I was with this piece of paper that I just knew was going to make me a lot of money but I was definitely wrong.
Shortly after I received a job working for State Farm insurance, I worked for them 6 years after college in the states of Arkansas Tennessee and Texas. I was so miserable and I remember praying and asking God to not allow me to be “stuck” . I left State Farm and received another job but to only be laid off after only 4 months of working. I knew it was time for me to take control of my destiny. I wanted to make myself financially secure. I wanted to be in control of when I worked, how much I worked. And most importantly I wanted to love what I did. Hair was always a passion but I didn’t understand my purpose for it when I was younger. I signed up for cosmetology school and completed the program in less than 10 months. I graduated in September of 2014 and opened my salon November 2014. My first day, I had only 1 Client. I didn’t lose hope. I knew that I would get out of it what I put in. It’s now been 3.5 years and I’ve expanded and my business is one of the top 10 listed on style seat for natural hair. It amazes me of how far I’ve come and I’m anxious to see where I’m headed. I truly love what I do! I can now say each day my life is filled with purpose.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. It takes time building clientele. Some days are better than others. The slow days are the days when you learn to push yourself harder. Do more marketing and advertising, etc.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the New Look Hair Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is New Look Hair Studio. I’m a hairstylist and I specialize in extensions and natural hair. I am known for my signature Silk Blowout. It’s absolutely amazing! 🙂 I’m so proud that I’m able to make my clients smile when they leave my chair. I believe that my personality sets me apart. I often say that people not only come to you because you’re a good hairstylist, but they come because they genuinely like you as a person. The right attitude will take you far.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5 years, I would like to have multiple locations open and it will be a full-service salon.
